    Many people in the South didn't agree with Lincoln. When he was elected president it caused states to want to leave the Union.

    South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas left the Union and formed the Confederacy.

  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. They didn't cast a single vote for President Lincoln. This started a chain reaction and other states seceded after them.

    President Lincoln took office and was officially the leader of the Union. This caused anger in many states,

    The Confederacy was blocking supplies from the soldiers at Fort Sumter. On April 12, 1861 the Confederacy open fired on Fort Sumter and this was the first battle starting the Civil War.

    After the Confederates lost the Battle of Antietam, neither France or Britain wanted to support the Confederacy in the Civil War.

    It was supposed to free slaves in the Confederate states. It didn't free very many but it gave the Union a strong moral cause to win the war. It later resulted in the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.
