    South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas left the Union and formed the Confederacy.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. They didn't cast a single vote for President Lincoln. This started a chain reaction and other states seceded after them.

    After the Confederates lost the Battle of Antietam, neither France or Britain wanted to support the Confederacy in the Civil War.

    It was supposed to free slaves in the Confederate states. It didn't free very many but it gave the Union a strong moral cause to win the war. It later resulted in the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.
