    Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, became president in 1860. The South started to worry that they would not be able to keep their slaves, because Republicans were against slavery. The South decided to secede once Abraham Lincoln became president.
  • South Seceded

    First President of the Confederate States of America South Carolina seceded from the Union. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas seceded on Feburary 1. Three days later, delegates met in Montgomery, Alabama and formed the Confederate States of America. They then made Jefferson Davis their president.

    Fort Sumter Abraham Lincoln said that the South could not separate from the Union legally. So, the South decided to attack Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was a federal fort at the entrance to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. After the fort surrendered, the war began.

    Seven Day's Battle Lincoln sent Union troops to Virginia under General George McClellan's command. McClellan faced General Robert E. Lee. Robert E. Lee had resigned from the U.S. army to join the Confederates. When Lee attacked McClellan, it was called the Seven Day's Battle. It was six battles in seven days.

    Ulysses S. Grant Ulysses S. Grant was an important figure in the western region. He led his troops into Tennessee. On April6, the Confederates caught Grant by surprise and pusehd the Union back in the Battle of Shiloh. When the Union got some more troops, they couterattacked and forced the Confederantes back.

    Emancipation Proclamation The Emancipation Proclamation is the proclamatin that declared all slaves would be freed on January 1, 1663. During the war however, the Congress allowed about 180,000 African Americans to serve in the Union army.

    Battle of Gettysburg On July 1, 1863, the Confederates pushed the Union back. The next day, the Union pushed the Confederates back. Lee ordered General George Pickett to attack on July 3. Most of the Confederate soldiers were killed or captured.

At dawn, the Confederates advanced, gaining ground against Sheridan's cavalry. The arrive of the Union army stopped the Confederantes in their tracks. The Confederantes were surrounded on three sides. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. The war was over.
