  • Sweatt vs Painter

    In this case the court unanimously decided that the Equal Protection Clause required that Sweatt be admitted to the University of Texas Law School. This falls under Supreme Court Case.

  • Keys vs Carolina Coach

    This case outlawed the segregation of black passengers in buses traveling across state lines. This is a Supreme Court Case.
  • Northern Violence over School Integration

    When desegregation started in the North, a majority of the Northern and Southern whites were ready to fight desegregation. Violence soon started to outbreak among the North as schools were being desegregated, including racist chants. This falls under Violence by Protesters, and Violence by Opposition.
  • Emmet Till's Murder

    Emmet Till was a 14 year old, black teenager. On a family trip to Money, Mississippi Emmet was brutally murdered by a group of white men because of supposedly flirting with a white woman. This falls under Violence by Opposition.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a civil rights protest in which black people refused to ride city busses. This was in hopes to protest segregated seating on public transportation.

  • Creation of the Montgomery Improvement Association

    The Montgomery Improvement Association was established as a grassroots movement to fight for civil rights for African Americans. As well as the desegregation of the buses in Alabama's capital city. This falls under Achievement
  • Founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is a civil rights organization, an offshoot of the Montgomery Improvement Association. It successfully staged a 381 day boycott of the Montgomery Alabama segregated bus system. This falls under Achievement and Protest.
  • Little Rock Nine Crisis

    The Little Rock Nine Crisis occurred when nine female black students were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School. When walking through the crowds they were screamed at, and had objects thrown at them. When they arrived at the front doors, the National Guard prevented their entrance and forced them to go home. This falls under Violence by Protesters.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    The Civil Rights Act of 1957 established the Civil Rights section of the Justice Department, and empowered federal prosecutors to obtain court injunctions against interference with the right to vote. This was the first civil rights legislation since Reconstruction. This falls under Legislation.
  • Cooper vs Aaron

    This case denied the school board at Little Rock , Arkansas the right to delay racial segregation for 30 months. This falls under Supreme Court Case.

  • Greensboro Sit-In

    Four students sat at the lunch counter at Woolworth in downtown Greensboro, where the official policy was to refuse service to anyone other than white. The students refused to give up their seats. This falls under No Violence, and Protest.
  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom rides were a series of political protests against racial segregation on public transportation. As a result of this, regulations were passed that banned racial segregation on public transportation. This falls under No Violence, and Legislation.
  • Albany Campaign

    The Albany Campaign was a movement aimed to put an end to racial segregation in the city. It was a desegregation and voting rights coalition, founded by black leaders and ministers. It was the first mass movement in the civil rights era with its goal to desegregate a whole community. This falls under No Violence, and Protest.
  • Integration of the University of Mississippi

    Riots were started on the campus of U of MS, where students, locals, and segregationists protested the enrollment of James Meredith. At the time it was an all white school. This falls under Violence by Protesters.
  • Birmingham Movement

    The Birmingham Movement was an American movement that wanted to bring attention to the efforts made for integration in public facilities. This movement was led by Martin Luther King Jr. This falls under Violence by Opposition.
  • Assassination of Medgar Evers

    Medgar Evers was a civil rights activist and the NAACP's first field secretary in Mississippi. He was shot in front of his house in Jackson, Mississippi. This falls under Violence by Opposition.
  • March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom

    The March on Washington was a gathering for advocating for the civil and economic rights for African Americans. Around 250,000 people attended. This falls under No Violence, and Protest.
  • Mississippi Freedom Summer

    Mississippi Freedom Summer was a voter registration drive focused on increasing the number of registered black voters in Mississippi. Summer volunteers were soon impacted with violence by the KKK as well as state and local law enforcement. This falls under Violence by Opposition.
  • Civil Rights Act on 1964

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination of the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This act forbades the discrimination on the basis of sex, as well as race in hiring, promoting, and firing. This falls under Legislation.
  • Heart of Atlanta Motel vs US

    This established that hotels cannot, and do not have the right to discriminate against black guests. This falls under Supreme Court Case.
  • Assassination of Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist. He was shot whilst giving a speech at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NYC. This falls under Violence by Opposition.
  • March from Selma to Montgomery

    In the March from Selma to Montgomery hundreds of people marched to ensure African Americans could exercise their rights to vote. This falls under No Violence, Protest, and eventually Legislation.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in most southern states after the Civil war, including the literacy tests as a prerequisite for voting. This falls under Legislation.
  • James Merediths march against fear

    James Meredith was the first African American to enroll at the University of Mississippi. He began a solitary across the South, to call attention to racism and continued voter discrimination in the South. This falls under Protest.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was a baptist minister and civil rights activist. He was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, in Memphis, Tennessee. This falls under Violence by Opposition, and Violence by Protesters.
  • Fair Housing Act

    The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in housing because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental handicaps, or family status. This falls under Legislation.

  • Swann vs Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

    This court case dealt with integrating school buses children road on, across different district lines. The goal was to further integration into public schools. This falls under Supreme Court Case.
  • Shirley Chisholms Presidential Campaign

    Shirley was the first black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the US. She was also the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's nomination. This falls under achievement.
  • Hank Aaron's Home Run Record

    Hank Aaron, Atlanta Braves star hit his 715th career home run pitched by the Los Angles Dodgers, Al Downing. This home run broke the record of Babe Ruth. This falls under achievement.
  • Barbara Jordan's Address at the Democratic National Convention

    Barbara was the first African American as well as the first woman to deliver a keynote address at a party's address. This falls under achievement.
  • University of California Regents vs Bakke

    This ruled that it is unconstitutional for racial "quotas" in university's admissions process. This falls under Supreme Court Case.
