  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks a black woman refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. She was arrested and public outcry in the black comunity was created. So they denied to utilize public transportation and did it peacefully. And their leader was Martin Luther King Jr.
  • The Little Rock 9

    The Little Rock 9
    In 1957 9 black students were enrolled into a white only high school. They attempted to enter the school on the first day but were greeted by the national guard blocking the entrance and racist whites taunting them. President Eisenhower sent in 1,200 military troops to escort them to schoolan, they continued to do this for the rest of the year.

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    This bill began the desegragation of public schools.
  • The Sit-in Movement

    The Sit-in Movement
    Black students sat in a white only bar and they were attacked by white people who were attempting to throw them out of the bar and beat the students as they were peacefully sitting in the bars.
  • The Freedom Riders

    The Freedom Riders
    A collection of whites and blacks rode buses into segragated states to make a stand to segragation in other states. they would be attacked and threatened by them
  • James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi

    James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi
    James Meredith enrolled into University of Mississippi and immediately riots broke out and left many injured and two dead. The NAACP filed a lawsuit against the university and it ended in favor of Meredith
  • Protests in Birmingham

    Protests in Birmingham
    Black protestors were peacefully walking the streets spreading the word of equal rights. Suddenly protesters were attacked by white firefighters with fire hoses spraying them down and police dogs attaching them resulting in an increase support of the civil rights movement.
  • The March on Washington

    The March on Washington
    After the protests in Birmingham support for the movement skyrocketed but when King began planing the March on Washington he did not know how successful the protests were and believe that there would not be as many supporters as he had hoped. But contrary to his belief around 300,000 people had come to support the movement and he gave his I Have a Dream speech.

  • The Selma March

    The Selma March
    This 5 day long march to promote voting rights. During the protests a state trooper shot Jimmie Lee Jackson, a black man who was participating in the peaceful protest. He died later in the hospital. The marchers were met by officers around Edmund Pettus Bridge. The officers were ordered to attack the protesters. They beat them with batons and flooded them with tear gas. The news reported on as Bloody Sunday.

  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
    On April 4, 1968 and on that same day James Earl Ray shot and killed Dr. King. King was at Lorraine Motel in Memphis a motel he frequently visited.
