  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Four days before the boycott began, Rosa Parks, had gotten arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man.
    African Americans wanted to do something about it so they had decided to not ride the city buses for awhile.They would walk to work or any where else they needed to go.
    On June 5 1956 the U.S. Supreme court had ordered Montgomery to integrate it's bus system.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    The Little Rock Nine was a group of 9 African American students who enrolled at Central High School,an all white high school.
    On the first day the students were suppose to go to school, but Governor Faubus told the National Guard to block the entrance of the high school. Late that month though, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent federal troops to bring the Little Rock 9 into the school.
    The white protested for segregation and stood outside the school being rude and harmful .
  • Greensboro Sit-Ins

    Greensboro Sit-Ins
    Four young black students from North Carolina had staged a sit-in at a segregated lunch center.
    They refused to leave when they denied to serve them.
    People were arrested for trespassing and disturbing peace, but their actions were beginning to make an impact.
    A sit-in movement sparked after this and spread to 55 cities in 13 states. African Americans were being brave and standing up for integration.
  • King's March on Washington D.C.

    King's March on Washington D.C.
    African Americans came together to demand voting rights, equal opportunity, jobs and freedom.
    Martin Luther King, Jr had done his famous "I Have a Dream Speech".

    The year after the march the 24th Amendment got ratified and the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
    Many things had changed and many African Americans had courage that one day everything will get better for them.

    Selma- Montgomery March
    The protesters marched a 54 mile route from Selma to the capitol for efforts to register black voters in the South.
    The National Guard troops were there for the protection of the protesters because they had encountered deadly violence and white vigilante groups.
    Martin Luther had also attended making it raise more awareness for the black voters.
    The African Americans didn't stop the protest and African Americans got to have the participation they wanted in politics after August 6th.
  • Watts Riots

    Watts Riots
    Racial had reached a breaking point when two policemen suspected an African American drunk driving.
    There were people watching the scene and watched Frye get arrested.
    People believed that it was racially motivated abuse and tension had grew. Economic and political isolation embittered riots.
    The violence went on for 5 days which left 34 people dead and 1,032 injured.
    This only led into more riots and was one of the worst urban riots.
  • Newark Riots

    Newark Riots
    Many riots were done because of police brutality.
    John Smith was a cab driver. He was arrested because he had drove his taxi around a police car and double-parked it.
    The police man though had charged him with tailgating and driving in the wrong direction. Smith also got charged for offensive language and physical assault.
    A witness had seen his arrest and knew none of this had happened which only made the tension rise.
    Rioting continued and the African Americans continued chanting Black Power.
  • Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike

    Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike
    Two Memphis workers were crushed to death because the trash compression malfunctioned.
    1,300 sanitation workers in Memphis worked off the job.
    Martin Luther King even went down to Memphis to say a speech and lead a march.
    Things needed to change and African Americans were taking a stand for what was right for them.They needed to be protected and be able to do their jobs without getting hurt or dying.
  • LA Riots

    LA Riots
    4 LA police officers were caught beating an unarmed African-American motorist.
    Hours after the verdicts were announced people were outrages and the protests began turning into violence.
    More than 60 people dead, 2,000 injured and 7,000 almost arrested.
  • Ferguson Riot

    Ferguson Riot
    Micheal Brown, an African American, had been high and stole from a shop.
    A cop had stopped him and asked him what he was doing, but Micheal had punched him.
    The cop had shot him and people had begun the riot. The story had gotten switched around which is what triggered the riots to even have happened.
    One of his friends he was with had told people that the policemen had just shot him for no reason, but once he had gone to trial he decided to not lie anymore.
    Protests worsened until it ended.
  • Baltimore Protest

    Baltimore Protest
    Freddie Gray suffered a spinal cord injury in police custody.
    More than 1,000 people marched through the streets of Baltimore.
    Gray was arrested because he possessed a switchblade, but it turned out to not be one and was completely legal.
    People did not believe what happened to Gray was fair and people continued to protest.Bricks were thrown into car windows,buildings, even throwing other objects at police.
    The message was out and police have to be more careful and not discriminate blacks.
