Brown v. Board of Education
Linda Brown isn't allowed to go to school with white kids. Oliver brown who is her father, goes to the NAACP. It goes to the Supreme Court and it rules 9-0 to overturn the separate but same doctrine. -
Emmett Till Murder
A 14 year old black boy named Emmett Till was accused of whistling at a white women. The woman's husband and his half brother kidnapped Emmett and brutally tortured him. They brutally beat him and then threw him into a river. The murderers were tried and found not guilty. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks refused to move seats for a white man and is arrested. She was charged $10. Flyers were sent out, the community decided to boycott the busses. The busses were empty for a while. The Supreme Court ruled that busses had to let the blacks ride the bus. -
SCLC
A group of black pastors who hosted events for blacks. Martin Luther King Jr. was elected as president. This group was nonviolent, it registered blacks to vote, wanted better jobs for blacks, and opposed the Vietnam War. -
Little Rock 9
9 black students wanted to go to an all white school. The governor of Arkansas called the national guard to stop them from entering. President Eisenhower called 1,200 military men to escort the 9 kids from home to class. All schools were fully integrated by 1959. -
Greensboro Sit ins
4 college students go to Woolworths to buy staff and sit at the lunch counter. They are told to leave and got refused to get attended but they refused to move. they would go sit at the lunch counter everyday with more and more people each day. Woolworths lost $1.8 millions so they decided to serve the black community. -
Ruby Bridges
One of the 6year old black children pass a hard test to go to an all white school. She was escorted by Federal Marshals, to be the only student taught by one teacher. -
Freedom Riders
A diverse group volunteers form 39 states, it was college students. In Anniston, Alabama they were blocked by the KKK, their tires were slashed, they were fire bombed, the bus was burned and the riders were beaten town after town. -
March on Washington
250,00 people marched in Washington, D.C. it was a protest for job and freedom but it was nonviolent. Martin Luther King Jr. was the speaker and gave his "I have a dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Enabled the Federal government to prevent racial discrimination based off race, religion, or national origin. -
Malcom X
Civil rights leader who was part of Islam. He wanted blacks to be proud of who they are. He was shot 21 times. Thomas Hagan was convicted for his murder. -
Selma
Black marchers wanted to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. They were met by troopers and were brutally beaten. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Allowed African Americans to vote. It was now a federal matter not state. -
Martin Luther King Jr
Striking sanitation workers protest in Memphis. Martin Luther King Jr. goes back to the motel and gets shot in his face by a riffle. James Earl Ray was sentenced to 99 years. MLK's marks the end of Civil Rights Movement.
