People think Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, a city which is now called Italy.

Columbus' dad was Domenico Columbo and his mother was Susanna Columbo. Christopher did not learn to read or write because he had little schooling.

Christopher Columbus got married to Fillipa Moniz Prestrello, and in 1480, his son Diego was born. The family stayed in Libson until 1485 when his wife Fillipa died. Then Columbus and Diego moved to Spain where he began trying to obtain a grant to explore to Western trade routes.

Christopher set sail on August 3rd, 1492. He was looking for a route to Asia. He had 3 ships; the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria, and had 104 crew members. The ships set out across the Atlantic. This voyage took 5 weeks, much longer than he expected because he thought the Earth was smaller than it is.

Christopher Columbus had 17 ships with 1,500 men on his second voyage. He passed through many islands of a group called The Lesser Antilles, such as Martinique, St. Lucia and Grenada.

Columbus left Spain with a fleet of 6 ships, 3 of them laden with supplies for Hispaniola. Columbus set sail along a southerly course across the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape Verde Islands. Then headed Northeast until he reached an island in the West Indies, which Columbus named Trinidad. Christopher Columbus also crossed a gulf and sailed through a tidal wave. He named the area La Boca de la Serpe which means the serpent's mouth.

In his later years, he wrote amd published a book called "A Book Of Privilages". Later, he demanded that the Spanish crown give him 10% of all profits made in the new lands. The crown did not feel bound by this contract and it was rejected.

Columbus' 4th voyage was called "el atto viaje" meaning "the high voyage" because he had high hope that this voyage would result in the discovery of the sea route to Asia. Christopher Columbus set sail from Cadiz, Spain, with 4 ships and about 140 men. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed southwest across the West Indies to search for a westward passage to Asia. He explored the coastline of present-day Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

While sailing to Hispaniola, Columbus ran into a hurricane, which battered his ships. His fleet became stranded at a small bay on Jamaica's north coast, where the crew remained for a year.

Christopher Columbus died on May 20, 1506 from a heart attack.
