    Christopher Johnson McCandless was born on Februrary 12, 1968, in El Segundo, California. He was the first of two children born to Walter McCandless and Wilhelminah Johnson.

    Chris had one younger sister, Carine. In 1976, chris and his family moved to Annandale, Virginia after his father was employed by NASA. Chris' mom worked as a secritary at Hughes Aircraft and later worked with her husband from his home-based consulting company.

    Chris graduated from Wilbert Tucker Woodson High School in Virginia. That summer he traveled through the country, and returned home only two days before college started.

    After a couple months in Las Vegas, he moves his way south to Bullhead City, Arizona. There he gets a job at a local McDonald's and works there for a few long months. This is most likely the longest period of time he has stayed in one place.
