Christopher Johnson McCandless was born on Februrary 12, 1968, in El Segundo, California. He was the first of two children born to Walter McCandless and Wilhelminah Johnson. -
Early Life
Chris had one younger sister, Carine. In 1976, chris and his family moved to Annandale, Virginia after his father was employed by NASA. Chris' mom worked as a secritary at Hughes Aircraft and later worked with her husband from his home-based consulting company. -
Graduates from High School
Chris graduated from Wilbert Tucker Woodson High School in Virginia. That summer he traveled through the country, and returned home only two days before college started. -
Chris graduates college
Shortly after he graduated from Emory University, he donated $25,000 to OXFAM, an organization that was dedicated to fighting hunger. -
Chris abandoned his car
Chris' car was destroyed in a flash flood. As a result, he abandoned his car and continued the rest of his journey on foot. -
Chris changed his name
As a result of Chris starting a new chapter in his life, he decided to change his name. He changed his name from Chris McCandless to Alex Supertramp. -
Begins to canoe
After he leaves the grain elevator in South Dakota, he begins to canoe the Colorado River and other bodies of water for over two months. -
Chris moves to Las Vegas
After a few months of traveling, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He went there in search of a jb, starting of with no source of identification and $0. He then got a job working at an Italian resturaunt. -
Chris moves to Bullhead City
After a couple months in Las Vegas, he moves his way south to Bullhead City, Arizona. There he gets a job at a local McDonald's and works there for a few long months. This is most likely the longest period of time he has stayed in one place. -
Chris meets Ronald A. Franz
Chris lived with Ronald for a while. There, he was taught how to make leather. He made a leather belt and carvied into it, reminding him of all his journeys so far. -
Chris leaves the Grain Elavator and heads to Alaska
When Chris left for Alaska, he had exactly $1,000 on him. He was crying as he was leaving civilization, because he knew he may never see anyone ver again. -
Chris' death
Chris was pronounced dead on August 18, 1992. He was found dead in an abandoned bus. His death was most likely caused of starvation or hypothermia
