  • Darwin’s Trip around the World on the HMS BEAGLE

He sailed between 1831-1836 using his observations and experiences to develop his theory of evolution. During this voyage he collected plants and animals including a variety of birds. He noticed finches from the island and mainland were similar with the exception of how they collected food developing his natural selection theory.

  • On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection is published

In this book, Darwins argues that organisms evolve through a process he named "natural selection." He believed organisms had genetic variations that create more descendants than that of the same species affecting the overall genetic makeup. Following publication, it sold out immediately and was embraced by most scientists.

  • The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is published

This book was divided into two parts; the first part dealt with behavioral and morphological evidence to argue that humans evolved from animals. While the second part discussed the sexes of different species, arguing that their characteristics evolve due to sexual competition, not their biological environment.

  • The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is published

This book was the final part of Darwins "great evolunary cycle of writing" completing his trilogy on evolution. In this work he laid out his theories of the evolution of plants and animals introducing concepts of natural selection and survival of the fittest. This book displayed his work with photographs.

  • Charles Darwin dies

Friends and colleagues petitioned that Darwin should receive a ceremonial funeral. Galton had the Royal Society request a state burial and Darwin was buried in Westminster Abbey instead of Downe.
