Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in The Mount House, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom.

Darwin attended the University of Edinburgh from 1825-1827 where he started to study medicine.

Darwin attended Christ's College, Cambridge from 1828-1831 where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts. He then went on to achieve a Master of Arts in 1836.

After college, Darwin toured South America and the Pacific on a vessel called the Beagle. He made natural history collections, studied geology and wrote extensive notes on his findings throughout his 5 year voyage. After returning home he published his collections and findings in his book called "The Voyage of the Beagle", he earned the Fellow of the Royal Society award of this contribution.

In May 1842, Darwin published his first monograph "The Structure & Distribution of Coral Reefs" which set out his theory of the formation of coral reefs.This was widely recognized as a major scientific work that presented his deductions from all the available observations on this large subject.

Darwin recieved the Royal Medal of the Royal Society for his three volume work on the geology of the Beagle voyage, and for the barnacle research he was currently doing.

Darwin's most notable and impactful work "On the Origin of Species" was published on November 24, 1859. His theory that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor was widely accepted and is now considered to be a fundamental concept in science. Here is a short video on his theory!

Charles Darwin died in 1882 but his contributions to the scientific community live on. He is known to us now as the father of evolution and still remains one of the most substantial scientists in the history of our society.
