    Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Bleeding Kansas

    Though these dates are not technically accurate, Bleeding Kansas took place from 1854 to 1860 and involved the white southerners who were for slavery vs the abolitionists of the North. This led to towns being raided and small "skirmishes", with one in particular involving John Brown and his accomplices murdering five pro-slavery whites.
  • Preston Brooks canes Charles Sumner

    Preston Brooks canes Charles Sumner
    This occured after Sumner talked badly about some of Brooks relatives, which led to him caning Sumner, causing long-term damage to him.
  • Tariff of 1857

    Tariff of 1857
    This tariff (after the Panic of 1857) reduced duties to around 20% on dutiable goods, which would be the lowest since the War of 1812.
  • Dred Scott v. Stanford

    Dred Scott v. Stanford
    This Supreme Court case involved Dred Scott, who was a slave that had been set free being, sued for freedom on the basis that he had lived on free soil. Sadly though, the court ruled that Scott was a slave and not a citizen of the U.S.

    Panic of 1857 begins
    This occured after a ship carrying gold for the U.S. banks had sunk during a violent hurricane near South America. This led to a financial crisis within the U.S. due to the need for gold/silver and banks not having paper money.

    Lecompton Constitution
    Though the exact date is uknown (September, 1857 was the only date found online) this was in response to the anti-slavery position in Kansas and was to produce a rival document towards them.

    These debates were between the Republican nominee Abraham Lincoln and the Democratic nominee Stephen Douglas. Most of these debates involved the issue of slavery.

    Confederate States of America founded
    Though the actual date is unknown, it was founded in February of 1861, with Jefferson Davis as its "president".

    This act superseded the low Tariff of 1857 by increasing duties 5 to 10 percent, which boosted them to around the moderate level of the Walker Tariff of 1846.

    This act gave an applicant ownership of a piece of land at little to no cost. However, many of these people lived on very small pieces of land, had to farm to live, and lived in very small sod huts.

    New York draft riots
    This riot broke out when the Union called for a draft to bring men into the army to fight for the Union in the war. This riot lasted for three days until it ended on 7-16-1863.
