    Women Lead Reform
    In 1896, The African-American women founded the National Association of Colored Women by merging two earler organizations. Susan B. Anthony lead the proponent of women suffrage, the right to vote. In 1869, Anthony and Elizabet Cady Stanton founded the National Women Suffrage Association and later united with another group to become the National American Woman Suffrage Association. This helped gave women to be slightly more equal to men and gave them the right to vote later on. Big impact in PE.
  • William McKinley is elected President

    William McKinley is elected President
    He was the 25th president of the United States. He served from March 4, 1897 until his assasination in September of 1901. He led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry and maintained the nation. His presidency marked the beginning of a period of dominance by the Republican Party. This was important because he played a big role with the Treaty of Paris and helped the United States acquire the Philippines and Puerto Rice
  • U.S.S. Maine

    U.S.S. Maine
    In February 1898, the New York Journal published a private letter written by the Spanish minister to the U.S. A Cuban rebel stole the letter and leaded it to the newspaper. It criticized President McKinley and the Americans were angry over the insults. McKinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to bring home American citizens in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. The ship blew up in the harbor of Havana and 260 men were killed. We blamed this on Spain and war began.

    Annexation of Hawaii
    After purchasing Alaska in 1867, the United States took over the Midway Islands. Hawaii was another question. The islands has been economially important to the U.S. for nearly a century. Since the 1790's American merchants had stopped there on their way to China and East India. In the 1820's Missionaries founded christian schools and churches there. Hawaiin sugar production was a major part of the U.S.'s sugar. The U.S. claimed Hawaii as an American territory. Major event in AI. 50th state.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The U.S. and Spain agreed to sign an armistice, a cease-fire agreement, on August 12th. The actual fighting only lasted about 16 weeks. In July, the Rough Riders battled at Kettle Hill. This lead an infantry attack to victory at San Juan Hill. At the peace talks, Spain freed Cuba and turned over the islands of Guam in the Pacific and Puerto Rico in the West Indes to the U.S. Spain also sold the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million. This started giving the U.S. national recognition in the AI.
  • The Open Door Notes

    The Open Door Notes
    The U.S. feared that China would be carved into colonies and American traders would be shut out. To prevent this, U.S. Secretary of State John Hay issued in 1899, a series of policy statements called the Open Door notes. The notes were letters addressed to the leaders of imperialist nations proposing that the nations share their trading rights with the U.S. This meant that no single nation would have a monopoly on trade with any part of China. This helped out with trading in the AI.

    Protecting social welfare - This was aimed to help the poor though community centers, churches, and social services. Promoting moral improvement - They made the Prohibition, the banning of alcoholic beverages. Creating economic reform - Journalists wrote about the corrupt side of business and public life in mass circulation magazines during the early 20th century were known as muckrackers. Fostering efficiency - Making the workforce more efficient. This was a major part of how America progressed
  • The Jungle

    The Jungle
    This book was written by Upton Sinclair and this book was about Upton exposing the practices of American Meatpacking industry in the 20th century and the unpleasent living and working conditions. Sanitation was a big issue in the meatpacking industry. Thodore Roosevelt invited Sinclair to the White House and he would later on eradicate the AMI. It also sparked the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Important because they were major new laws and policies in the Progressivism era.
  • Archdude Franz Ferdinand Assassinated

    Archdude Franz Ferdinand Assassinated
    Archdude Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Bosnia. They were killed by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a member of the Black Hand. This sparked the Great War. Nations starting declaring war and becoming allies nonstop. United States would join the war after staying neutral for a couple years. This was one of the most talked about things up until it's time. This was very important because it sparked war which began two months after the assassination.
  • The Panama Canal

    The Panama Canal
    Many Americans and Teddy Roosevely felt that the U.S. needed a canal cutting across Central America. It would greatly reduce travel time for ships by making a shortut between the Atlanic and Pacific. This really helped the U.S. with traveling by ships to greatly reducing the time and having to sometimes go all the way around the tip of South America. This was important because it was a very prestigious in it's time accomplishment in the American Imperialism era.
  • Lusitania is Destroyed

    Lusitania is Destroyed
    This was one of the worst disasters. A U-boat sank the British liner Lusitania off the southern coast of Ireland. 1,200 people died, 128 of them were Americans. Amercans were more toward the Germany and the Central Powers until this happened. Germany's explanation was not good enough, Americans were still mad over the loss of life. The Americans public opinion started to turn against Germany and the Central Powers. This played a major role in why the U.S. entered the war later in 1917.
  • Selection Service Act

    Selection Service Act
    This act was passed because America let their neutrality and had just declared war one month earlier. To meet the government's need for more fighting power, Congress passed the SSA in May 1917. This act required men to register with the government in order to be randomly selected for military service. By the end of 1918, 24 million men had registered. About 3 million were called up to go to war. Very important because the men would fight with the Allied Powers in the biggest war in the world.
  • Alvin York

    Alvin York
    During the fighting in the Meuse-Argonne area, one of America's greatest war heroes Alvin York, became famous. He was a conscientious objector, a person who opposes warfare on moral grounds, pointing out that the Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill." He decided it was morally acceptable to fight if the cause was just. He was very right. Armed with only a rifle and a revolver, he killed 25 Germans and with six other doughboys, captured 132 prisoners. Important cause he set an example for many people
  • The Big Four

    The Big Four
    Nations gathered in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles to sign a peace treaty. The Treaty of Versailles established nine nations. The treaty barred Germany from maintaining an army. It also required Germany to return land to other countries and pay for reparations of the war. It amounted $33 billlion. Important because the treaty had many flaws that sowed the seeds for a Second World War. The treaty didn't cause peace, it ended up causing an even larger and more destructible war.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    In 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified. This Ammendment gave women the right to vote. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Caty Stanton drafted the ammendment and first introduced it in 1878. It took 72 years after women had first convened and demanded the right to vote at the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. Very important because this has changed and has effected the nation since this ammendment was passed.
