Chapter 11: The Jackson Era

  • Jackson is inaugurated.

    In the election of 1828, mudslinging, election slogans, rallies and buttons are introduced. Jackson initiates the spoils system and abandons the caucus system for nominating conventions.
  • Webster-Hayne Debate

    Daniel Webster attacks nullification on the floor of the Senate, to challenge a speech given by a young, South Carolina Senator.
  • Congress passes the Indian Removal Act

    Act allowed government to pay Native Americans to move west into the Indian Territory created in present day Oklahoma.
  • Andrew Jackson challenges the Bank of the United States

  • South Carolina threatens to secede over the nullification crisis.

    State Legislature passed the Nullification Act, declaring it would not pay the "illegal" tariffs of 1828 and 1832.
  • Blackhawk leads Sauk and Fox people to Illinois

    Nearly 4.500 militia and federal troops chased the Fox and Sauk to the Mississippi river and slaughtered most of the Native Americans as they tried to flee westward.
  • John Quincy Adams wins Presidency in House Election

    Elected President with the help of Henry Clay, known as "corrupt bargain."
  • Seminole Refuse to leave Florida

    Joined forces with a group of African-Americans who had escaped slavery and attacked settlements along the Florida coast using guerilla tactics.
  • Van Buren is elected President

  • Panic of 1837 Strikes

    Economic depression. VanBuren did very little to stop it except establish independent federal Treasury in 1840.
  • Cherokee driven from their homeland along Trail of Tears

    General Winfield Scott and an army of 7,000 came to remove Cherokee from their homes and lead them west.
