  • Dred Scott

    Scott unsucessfuly sued for his, his wives and his childrens freedom. It became known as the "Dred Scott Decision". Showed that African Americans werent citizens.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    One of the major events leading to the civil war, would have banned slavery in any territory to be acquired from Mexico in the Mexican war or in the future. Included the Mexican Cession. Introduced by Congressman David Wilmot.
  • Free Soil Party

    A short lived political party in the United States active from 1848 through 1852 presidential elections, and in some state elections Its purpose was to oppose slavery from moving West.

    A crime to help runaway slaves. commisioners who rejected a slave holders calim earned $5 while those who returned suspected fugitives to slave holders earned $10. the enforcement began immediately. in sept, 1850, the same month the law passed a federal marshalls arrested James Hamlett. in 1850, Anthony burns , a fugitive slave from virginia was arrested in boston.

Douglas critisized lincoln that the nation coould not remain "half slave, half free"
