End of the French and Indian War
-The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War in 1763.
-The French was essentially banished from North America.
-Britain claimed the land that used to belong to the French.
-The British were in debt due to costs of the war.
-Strengthened the 13 American colonies. -
The Sugar Act
-British legislation wanted to end the smuggling of sugar and molasses from the French and Dutch West Indies to help fund the British Empire for the French and Indian War.
-Colonists reacted by boycotting the luxury goods imported from Great Britan and 50 merchants from throughout the colonies. The colonists agreed to boycott specific items and produced some items themselves. -
The Formation Of The Sons Of Liberty
-Created Sons of Liberty to rebel from the British and their taxes.
-They caused the The Boston Tea party and was disbanded when the Stamp Act was repealed. -
Quartering act
-The Quartering Act required colonial authorities to provide food, drink, quarters, fuel, and transportation to British forces stationed in their towns or villages.
-Colonists were against this Act because they were being taxed for provisions and barracks for the army. -
The Stamp Act
-The Stamp Act was passed in 1765 by the Parliament and required colonists to pay taxes on printed materials.
-Colonists reacted through many ways such as boycotting British goods and rioting tax collectors. -
The Townshend Acts
-Series of four acts passed by the British Parliament in 1767 to gain authority over the American colonies. The Townshend acts included the Suspending Act, the Townshend duties (Revenue Act), the act that created the Board of the Customs Commissioners, and the Indemnity Act.
-Colonists reacted by boycotting British goods. -
The Boston Massacre
-Deadly riot on King Street in Boston. A street fight between American colonists and a British soldier turned into a whole messy slaughter.
-The Boston Massacre further tarnished the colonists' relationship with the British and was yet another event that inspired the American Revolution. -
Gaspèe Affair
-A mob burns down a British ship that was patrolling for smugglers in Rhode Island and are accused of treason, but never punished.
-Led by John Brown, a large group of citizens burned the ship as a form of civil defiance against Lieutenant William Duddington, who was recieved negatively due to detaining vessels, confiscating cargoes, and more. -
The Boston Tea Party
-Protest by the Sons of Liberty where they dumped 342 chests of East India Company tea into the harbor.
-Were protesting "taxation without representation." -
Boston Port Act
-In response to the Boston Tea Party, the Parliament closed the Boston ports. The Colonists had to pay for all the tea lost to open the ports back up.
-Colonists believed they had to unite together to fight against taxes before they continued to lose more rights. -
The First Continental Congress
-Delegates from all 13 colonies met to form the First Continental Congress.
-Organized resistance to the Parliament's Coercive Acts. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
-The British Army set out from Boston to capture rebel leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Lexington as well as to destroy the Americans store of weapons and ammunition in Concord. The colonists did not want them to take their resources, so they defended it and won the battle.
-Colonists celebrated this major victory because it showed the British that they did not tolerate unfair treatment/behavior.
