Causes of the American Revolution

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    French and their Indian allies vs the British and colonists.
    The war was started when the colonists drove the French out of land claimed by Britain. The war resulted in the Proclamation of 1763.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    Parliament placed a tax on paper. Colonists had to buy a stamp with every piece of paper which lead to boycotts and repeal.

    The king of Britain proclaimed the colonists could not settle passed the Appalachian mountains to stop them from fighting with native Americans. This angered the colonists because they fought a war for more land.
  • Committees of Correspondence

    Committees of Correspondence
    Shadow governments that protested the British governments laws. Boston formed the first committee of correspondence to encourage opposition to the prohibition of paper money.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    Sugar, coffee, molasses, and other things were taxed without the colonists consent. This lead to more boycotts and repeal.
  • The Quartering Act

    Parliament passed a law for colonists to pay to house troops who came to America to enforce the Kings laws which angered the colonists.
  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts
    Goods like paper, paint, led, glass, and tea were taxed before they got to the colonies. Boycotts and repeal were the result.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    British troops fired at a crowd of colonists because of verbal abuse and harrassement. This made the colonists feel that their government was not protecting them.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The British government decided the colonists could only buy cheap tea. They also put a tax on the tea. This angered the colonists and lead to men dressing up as native Americans and throwing boxes of tea off ships to protest.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    3 laws were made to punish colonists for the Boston tea party.
    The laws were:
    1) The Boston harbor would be closed until the colonists paid for the tea.
    2) The Massachusetts government was under British control.
    3) soldiers put on trial for murder would be tried in Britain, not the colonies.
    This resulted in the colonist forming the first continental congress.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    Delegates from 12 of 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to attend the first continental congress to discuss options, make laws, and unite the colonies and form militias. On October 26 when the meeting was over the delegates agreed to meet again for the second continental congress.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    The battles of Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the revolutionary war. The battle in Lexington was won by Britain, but the battle in concord was a victory for the colonies.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    Delegates from the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia again for a second continental congress to discuss ways to earn their independence from Britain.
  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense

    Thomas Paine's Common Sense
    Common Sense is a book by Thomas Paine that asked for independence for America. It was read aloud in taverns and George Washington read it to his troops in Boston. More people bought it than any other book published in American history.
