French and Indian War
War between the French and the British over colonial territory and wealth. Each side wanted to control more land. After the war the British attempted to make the American colonists pay for the cost of the war by making taxes on them. This led to the Revolutionary War -
Proclamation of 1763
King George III claimed all French land in North America for Great Britain and also didn't allow settlement past the Appalachian Mountains. This was to make peace with the Indians and organize their colony in their North American empire. Colonial land speculators did not like this and it started tension between the colonists and Britain. -
Sugar Act
English Parliament puts a three penny tax on molasses. The colonists reacted by smuggling molasses into the colony and disobeyed the act -
Stamp Act
Britain puts new taxes on legal documents, financial papers, playing cards, and newspapers. Virginians react by passing resolutions against it and a Boston mob attacked the home of the Massachusetts Lt. Governor. They form a Stamp Act Congress to protest the act. -
Townshend Acts
New taxes on British imports to the colonies ans new laws to stop smuggling and regulate trade to raise money to pay for the French and Indian War. The colonists reacted by pledging to boycott all British goods. -
Boston Massacre
A group of colonists throw snowballs at British troops and the troops fire at them. Five colonists are killed. Colonists are outraged and call this the Boston Massacre. -
Boston Tea Party
Patriots dress as Indians and throw 342 chests of tea into the harbor. This is a protest to the tea act and crowds of colonists cheer the Patriots. -
Intolerable Acts
A series of laws to punish the colonists for throwing the tea into Boston Harbor. Even more colonists called for revolt against the British.
Boston Port Act - Closed Boston Harbor
Massachusetts Government Act - took over the colonial government.
