  • End of French and Indian War

    End of French and Indian War
    England felt that a major reorganization of the American Empire was necessary. It also revealed the tension between the British and their colonists.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    This act reduced tax on molasses and strengthens compliance. It also assigned customs officers and created courts to collect the duties and prosecute smugglers.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    This act required the colonists to provide housing and supplies for the British troops stationed there after the French and Indian War. Many colonists complained about it but still went along.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    This act required colonists to pay a tax on almost all printed materials such as books, newspapers, court documents, etc. This was the first time that the Parliament imposed a direct tax on within the colonies and this caused tension in the colonists.
  • Townshend Revenue Act

    Townshend Revenue Act
    Series of measures, passed by the British Parliament in 1767, that taxed goods imported to the American colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Deadly Riot on King Street of Boston. British soldiers killed several people while being harassed by a mob.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Parliament passed a law that allowed companies to sell tea directly to the colonies, which made their tea cheaper even with the tax. The colonists thought that the British were trying to trick them into paying more taxes, so they decided to dress as Indians, board three ships loaded with tea and dumped all of it into the harbor.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Delegates from every colony, except for Georgia, met in Philadelphia. They announced a boycott of all British imports to withdraw the Coercive Acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea Party. The laws were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest in reaction to changes in taxation by the British Government.
