Causes of the American Revolution

    French and Indian War
    The French and Indian War was fought between the British and the French along with their Native american allies over the Ohio River Valley. Most of the fighting took place in souther Canada and todays central U.S. This war took place from 1754-1763. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended the war and forced France to give up all it's american land.

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Following the attacks of Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763, King Georage III issued a proclamation that stated that no colonist can settle or trade west of the Appalachian Mountains. This was one of the main spurs of the American Revolution, being that the colonists fought in the war for this land, now they can't even trade or live there. The purpose of this Proclamation was because England wanted to ease tensions with the Natives and not have the colonists killed.

    British Taxes the Colonies
    As a result of the French and Indian war, England needed to pay off it's war debts. To obtain money to pay off the depts, in November 1764 Parliament taxed the mother country and the colonies. The colonies were enraged and didnt think it was fair. During this time Parliament passed the Sugar act (1764), and soon the Stamp(1765(, Declaratory(1766) and Townshed(1767) acts.

    Taxation without representation is being forced to pay taxes without a goverment official to represent you. Nearly right after the Stamp Act was passed, most most protested it. They believed it took away their rights and freedoms. Some felt it was wrong for Parliament to tax them directly. This led to many problems to later come.

    In the summer of 1765,groups of every day working men led by Samuel Adams wanted to stop taxation. Following the stamp act of 1765, the sons of liberty, an underground society was created where colonists would meet and talk about revolution and stopping the taxation of the colonies. This group gained a lot of support and soon enough the sons of liberty existed in every colony, being the first group in american history. They are responsible for the boston tea party and the revolution itself
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    In march of 1770, some colonists of mixed descent were throwing snowballs and rocks at English soliders gaurding the customs house. This resulted on an extreme act of violence from the guards. What the soldiers did was fire at the civilians hurling the snowballs and rocks killing five people. This enraged many people, including a famous protester named Samuel Addams who called this incodent "The Boston Massacre."They considered this extremely unjust because the soldiers were relieved of charges.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    On May 10, 1773, Parliament passed an act that was not actually a new tax, but colonists thought it was. With 18 million pounds of unsold tea, The East India Tea Company sailed it all to the colonies for a bargain price. Being as the townshend acts were still in place, the colonists saw this as a new way to tax and England is making the money directly. The colonists sent these ships back as a response, leaving one ship behind in Charleston, casuing the Boston Tea Party.

    On December 16, 1773 English colonist's boycott against English Tea forced thw British to Allow direct sale to the clonies. The colonists thought this was a trick to stop them from smuggling tea and have them buy English tea and pay tax. As a result, a group of colonists named "The Sons of Leberty" started by John Hancock and Samuel Adams dressed has indans climbed aboard a nglish vessel and dumped tea overboard as an act of protest.

    Intolerable Acts
    Following the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Parliament passed the Intolerable acts of 1774. The purpose of passing the Intolerable Acts was to punish the colonies for the Boston Tea Party. Several laws were enacted, such as the Boston harbor being closed and shut off from trade and public meetings were considered illegal. Also, military rule was forcefully imposed on the colonies until the tea destroyed in the Boston Tea Party was paid off by colonists.
  • Battle Of Lexington and Concord

    Battle Of Lexington and Concord
    The was the offical first battle of The American Revolution. In April 1775, British troops leave from Boston and march onward to Lexington. The reason of why they do this is to search for weapons being stored by the Sons of Liberty, and to arrest John Hancock and Samuel Adams. Paul Revere hears about this charge and warns nearly 4,000 colonists. The colonists are ready for the British and attack the British, killing 273 soliders. The colonists then march on to Concord from Boston.
