Causes of Revolutionary War Timeline

  • End of the French and Indian War

    End of the French and Indian War
    The Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years' War or the French and Indian War in North America. The Britsh defeated the French and this was the document that ended the war. The French lost all of their land in North America and gave it to the British. The colonist weren't allowed to move into the land that was won. This was one reason why the colonists started to resent England.

    Britian Raised Taxes on the Colonists to Pay for the French and Indian War
    Britian was in huge debt after the French and Indian War. The British thought that if they were going to fight for land over in North America than the people living there should pay for it. The king and Parliment passed new laws heavily taxing the colonists without their consent.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    This act was passed by Parliment to help raise money for Britian.
    It also reinforced the Molasses Act of 1733. It reduced the rate by half and increasing measures to enforce the tax, the British hoped that the tax would actually be collected. This made the colonist feel that it was unfair to be taxed with being able to get to say a word about it in Parliment.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was passed by Parliment on November 1, 1765. This act was passed to help raise money from the colonists to pay for the French and Indian War. It Stated that all printed materials in the colonies be produced on stamped paper produced in London. The Colonists had no reprentatives in Parliment so again they did not have a say on the taxes put on them.

    Declaratory Act
    This act was passed by British Parliament, it allowed British authority to make and pass laws for the colonies. It was made to stop any celebration of the repeal of the Stamp Act. This act was created without representatives going to parliment and having a say in this act.
  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts
    This is a series of laws passed by Parliment. They were named after Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who proposed the program. Its goal was to raise revenue in the colonies to pay the salaries of governors and judges so that they would be independent of colonial rule, to create a more effective means of enforcing compliance with trade. regulations
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was when British soldiers shot and killed five colonists during an anti-tax mob. Colonists were protesting againts the most recent tax laws. They antagonized the Briitish soldiers by yelling, and throwing both sticks and snowballs at them. A British officer called in back up, these back up soliders were also attacked. The soldiers responded by firing at the colonists, five died, this shocked the colonists, and showed that the British would kill to enforce laws.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    This Act was passed by Parliment in an effort to raise money for their troops they sent to occupie the colonies. It wanted to stop smuggling Tea into the colonies and it also wanted to help save the British East India Company. The act granted the Company the right to directly ship its tea to North America and the right to the duty-free export of tea from Britain. Colonists often rebelled by not letting the tea get to the colonies or harassing the people in the company.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    This was when a group of Massachusetts Patriots from the "Sons of Liberty" protested againts the British Tea Act by disguising themselves as Native Americans, snuck on to British ships, and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston harbor . This was a win for the Colonists, but because of this King George the third to send more troops to enforce the lwas.
  • The Intollerable Acts

    The Intollerable Acts
    These were laws, set by King George the third, that were supposed to punish the colonists for the acts done at the Boston Tea Party. The Acts stated that the Boston Harbor would be closed, the Quatering act was put into affect, (colonists must house and feed Britihs soliders) and British officials could not be tried in the colonies. Boston also lost their right to have self-government. This angered the colonists, just adding fuel to the fire after the Boston Massacre.
  • The Battle of Lexington and Concord

    The Battle of Lexington and Concord
    It was the first battle of the Revolutionary War. It was started when British officials were sent to capture Samuel Adams, and John Handcock. However they were not successful in doing this, the reason was that Paul Revere had rode throughout Concord and warned everyone of the British arrival. Instead of arresting Adams, and Handcock, they were met by "Minute Men" armed and ready to fight. These battles were successful in saving Adams, and Handcock, and was the begining of the Revolutionary War.
