Proclamation of 1763
Colonists are not allowed to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. This angered colonists as they just fought along England against the French in the French and Indian War and felt they earned the right to settle in that land -
Sugar Act
A tax on all sugar and molasses. Colonists need sugar and have to pay more in taxes on an essential good they could not live without -
Stamp Act
A tax on all stamps/paper that the colonists had to pay for on everything. Causes more angst for the colonists -
Quartering Act
Colonists have to house British Soldiers and pay for them. This angered colonists because it costs them money but it also means they have no privacy anymore -
Declaratory Act
The only ones who have the right to tax the colonies is Parliament or the British lawmaking body and the colonists have no representation -
Townshend Acts
Tax on glass, tea, allowed British to search the colonists homes. This causes the colonists to have to spend more money and no privacy/protection from searches -
Boston Massacre
The colonists surrounded the customs house and throwing rocks/snowballs and 5 colonists were shot by soldiers. This was called a massacre to be used as propaganda to expand hatred for the English -
Tea Act
Made the tea cheaper but added a tax to it. The British East India company. Creates a monopoly for England. Angers the colonists who feel like they are being taken advantage of and used -
Boston Tea Party
In response to the Tea Act colonists dress up as Native Americans and dump 90,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor to cost England the money they would have made -
Intolerable Acts
England enforces/imposes the Intolerable acts as punishment for the Boston Tea Party. They do the following
1. Boston Harbor is closed down until the tea is paid for
2. Enforces Quartering Acts
3. Replaced local town council with British
4. British officials who are accused of a crime in the colonies are sent back to England for Trial
