With Cross still in grave condition in the hospital, Pierce works the Mr. Smith case alone. Mr. Smith calls the police with the location of the body but it is not easily found at the location Pierce and Greenburg arrive at and they are usually easily spotted. Mr. Smith calls again and tells them the actual location of the body and warns them not to truse each other, after going to the new location they find the body easily. Read 47 pages, 1555 total -

At a meeting of FBI agents Cross announces that he and Craig beileve that Pierce is Mr. Smith. He says that there have been clues all along and they just haven't seen them. He also had Craig exaggerate his condition so Pierce would be in charge of the case and Craig could gather evidence against him on the side. Pierce asks Cross to fly to New Jersey because he thinks that Mr. Smith has targeted his next victim and Cross tries desperately to think of a connnection between all the victims on his way. They think Pierce plans to kill the doctor Isabella was having an affair with and stake out his house, they even have a change to kill him but Pierce eludes them.
