Candombe was created sometime in the late 18th century by African slaves from the bantu region in Africa. This would be the start of a very popular type of music and dance in Uruguay.

Uruguay was founded as a country in 1825 and they slavery to start. About 17 years later in 1842 slavery was abolished in Uruguay and Africans were able to perform Candombe without getting harassed

In 1842 when there was no more slavery in Uruguay Africans were allowed perform Candombe which made it spread all through Uruguay and make the singing and dancing very popular.

In 1860 it is believed that carnival season was first practiced. This carnival like candombe was derived from African roots. The carnival consist of candombe as well as marching.

In 1998 Juan Carlos Cáceres made a song called tango negro. This song is one of the more famous songs that are based around candombe.

Candombe is still widely practiced in Uruguay and remains a very large part of music and dance in Uruguay.
