    Quebec's Padlock Law was introduced in 1937. The act made it illegal to use property for communist activities and literature in Quebec. This allowed policemen permission to seal off any property where communist literature or activity was supected.

    Began in 1945 when Igor Gouzenko learned that he and his family would be sent back to Russia. Gouzenko offered Canada information on Russian spies in return for protection. Canada agrees to his offer when Soviets attempt to kidnap him. 18 of 39 people named by Gouzenko were found and convicted.

    NATO was founded by a total of 12 countries including Canada. NATO was created as a defense pact to protect against Soviet aggression. During the Korean war communist countries allianced against the Nations of NATO.

    The Soviet Union breaks an agreement with the Allies. The Berlin Blockade was built by the Soviets to force Berlin under Soviet Union control by cutting off Allied powers. The Allies flew supplies to people in Berlin with ease proving the Berlin Blockade to be a failure.

The Frence try to reclaim South Vietnamese land, forcing South Vietnam to get China involved in backing them up. US played a key role in this war backing up France's forces. Canada's role was mostly supplying the US with war machinery and excepting "Draft Dodgers" into the country. Draft Dodgers were Americans who escaped conscription by immigration.

    Jewish people gain land in Middle - East, Arabs retaliate with violence. In 1956 the US and its allies support Israel while the Soviets support Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. Lester B Pearson creates peacekeeping plan when France, Britain and Israel attack Egypt. He sends 800 Canadian soldiers and is awarded Noble Peace prize for his resolution of the Suez crisis.

    John Diefenbaker was in favour of using the Bomarc missiles for Canada's defense as oposed to the Avro Arrow. During the Diefenbaker years unemployement rates were high and 14,000 Canadians lost their job as a result of the Avro Arrow cancellation.

    On October 4th the Soviets launched the first Suputnik satellite. The rocket that put Sputnik in orbit around earth was also able to be used as a nuclear warhead to any spot in North America. In response to this the Americans built intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

    The North American Air Defense agreement was signed on Jan 1st 1958. Canada permitted the US to build defence installations in the Northwest Territories, this was known as the DEW line (Distant Early Warning). If an unidentified object was detected NORAD would be alerted immediately.

    Cancelled on February 20th 1959, the Avro Arrow was a delta winged inteceptor aircraft. The Avro Arrow could achieve almost mach 3 speeds at altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet. Nobody knows why this project was cancelled and there is much controversy over this event.

    Kennedy addresses the nation on Cuban Missile CrisisWhen the Soviets sent Sputnik up into orbit, the US and Canada feared that the Soviets had a military advantage. The Americans responded by replacing their fleet of longe range bombing aircraft with ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles). US spy planes found Soviet missile site on the island of Cuba. President Kennedy created a blockade to stop missiles from being delivered. Canadians suggested that instead of a blockade the sites should be examined by independent experts.

    USSR vs Canada Summit SeriesThe Summit series as it was called was an eight game series of ice hockey played between Canada and the Soviets. The Soviets were looking for a competitive matchup with another country and the western countries strongest ice hockey competitor was Canada. The games were held both in Canada and the Soviet Union. Canada won the series 4-3 with tie in game 3. The Canadians came up with a comeback win in the final game when Paul Henderson scored the fourth goal with 34 seconds left in the game.

    The Fall of the Berlin WallIn September of 1989 more than a total of 13,000 East German tourists escaped through Hungary to Austria. The East German leader Egon Krenz stated in October of 1989 that the wall would stand for at least another 50 years if the conditions ramained the same. This created riots and protests all throughout East Germany. The wall was considered to fall on November the 9th 1989 although the entire wall had not been demolished as of this time. With Germany reunited citizens celebrated in Berlin.

    The dissolution of the Soviet Union signified the end of the Cold War and the beggining of a much more peaceful Russia. The Soviet Union flag was taken down by the newly elected Russian president at the time, Boris Yeltsin.
