  • Paris Peace conference and Treaty of Versailles

    Paris Peace conference and Treaty of Versailles
    • Mr PM Borden represented Canada.
    • Paris peace conference meeting in Paris to discuss terms of peace after the war.
    • Canada demanded separate seat at league of nations to assert independence from Britain.
    • Treaty of Versailles came out due to Peace conference.
    • June 28,1919 Treaty of Versailles was signed.
    • First time Canada represented itself as a Country that was separate from Britain. -Security: the country was scared after the war, wanted stability. -Peace: wanted peace after the war.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    • League of nations was based on the principle of collective security.
    • Prime Minister borden won canada the right to become a member.
    • First met in Paris in January 16,1920
    • U.S. refused to join
    • Main idea was to stop war from ever breaking out again.
    • Provided Canada with the opportunity to be a part of something without the control of Britain. -key words- Stop: everyone wanted to be able to prevent a war form ever happening again. Opportunity: gave Canada a chance to show independence.

    -Chanak: Turkish port run by Britain as conditioned from PPC
    -Turks wanted port back: direct access to Europe
    -Britain felt threatened, asked CAN for help
    -Canada refused Britains call for support
    -PM-King brought the issue to parliament
    -Crisis was over by the time the debate was done
    -CAN stood up for themselves and it was the first time we refused call of help from Britain
    -Key words-
    Over: CAN time for helping Britain is over
    Threat: everyone on edge, treated all possible threats seriously.

    -Negotiated treaty between Canada and USA to protect halibut
    -Britain wanted representative to sign off the treaty, PM-King refused
    -King threatened to set up an independent Canadian representative in Washington if Britain didn't back down
    -Britain backed down for fear of loosing their hold on Canada
    -First treaty negotiated by the Canadian government without Britains permission.

Recognition: we wanted to be known world wide as an independent country

    • At the Imperial Conference decisions needed to be made.
    • Lord Balfour a British politician who was respected by many called a special committee to come into play to examine the request made by Britain for formal recognition.
    • The committee came to a conclusion to publish the Balfour Report that supported the dominions position. -keywords- ( same as imperial conference)
  • King/Byng crisis

    King/Byng crisis
    • Prime Minister King sent out a request to the Governor General Byng of Vimy Ridge.
    • His plan was to call an election to dissolve the parliament and to challenge Britain.
    • But his request was refused.
    • However since this crisis took place no Governor General has since acted against a PM wishes since they themselves have been elected by the people personally. -key words- Refused: Canadians fighting for what we believe in. Governor General: person who represents British crown in Canada.

    • Opening Embassies in the U.S. -Embassies later were opened in France and Belgium. -Vincent Massey-> first diplomat -Canada was able to communicate with other nations without going through Britain. -Keywords- Without (Great Britain): We didn't need Great Britain we were capable on our own. Embassies: expanding and letting Great Britain and the U.S know that Canada is a indepent Country.
