    Quebec's Padlock LawThis law was to remove communism from Quebec. Anyone found using propaganda for communism could be sentenced to three to thirteen years in jail. This included printing out flyers and things similar to it.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko SkitGouzenko was a Russian spy that was assigned to the Soviet embassy in Ottawa in 1943. He decided to settle down in Canada as he was dissapointed with the Soviet life and politics. When he learned that his familly was being sent back to Russia he offered the Canadians secret documents exposing Russian spies, and asked for permanent protection from the Canadian government. This meant him and his familly could live in Canada. He did have to hide his protection so he could live in peace.
  • Berlin Blockade

    In 1948 Russia broke an agreement with its allies from World War Two and tried to force them out of Germany. They did this by making a blockade and stopping all supply lines to West Berlin. It did not succeed in forcing them out of Germany but it did raise tensions between the Soviet Union and its former allies. This was the final blow to start the cold war
  • NATO

    NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a defence pact to protect the Allies. With growing concerns of a Soviet Union attack this pact made everyone who signed it protect each other from enemy attacks. They belived that creating a united frot it would greatly decrease aggression to any member of NATO. Canada was included in NATO and could benifit from this protection as they were not making nuclear weapons at the time.

    Korean WarThe Korean War was a war between North Korea and South Korea. While North Korea was backed by Russia and the Communists South Korea was backed by the USA. Canada helped the thrid most and had around 25000 soldiers see action. The war ended in July 27, 1953 but Canada was asked to stay to maintain an uneasy truce until 1955.

    DEW lineDEW or the Distant Early Warning system was a set of radars that were meant to detect any incoming aircrafts of missiles. The NORAD pact enabled the USA to build it in Canada. Many Canadian pacifists belived that the building of DEW set the stage for a nuclear war over Canadian tertitory, some also belived that Canada's defense system was now soley in the US's hands, though most Canadians found comfort in knowing there was a defence system between them and the Soviet Union

    The Warsaw Pact was a respons to the formation of NATO. Led by the Soviet Union there were now two rival superpower which made making nuclear weapons more important. This led them into an arms race, an arms race is where you try and make more weapons than the enemy. Some Canadian pacifists saw this as insanity and started to protest and nuclear weapons were not allowed in Canada.

    The Suez Crisis started with the creation of Isreal. There had been an uneasy truce between the Jewish and Arabs. The location of the Suez Crisis increased tension and Israel was supported by the United States and the Soviet Union supported the countries of Iraq. When Egypt took control of the Suez canal and Israel, France and Britian. The stage was set for a serious internal conflict.

    Lester B. Pearson found the solution as Canada's secretary of state for external affairs. Pearson's plan was presented at an all-night emergency meeting of the UN. His plan was to call for an imeditate end to the shooting. It also added a UN peacekeeping force. Lester Pearson was awarded a Nobel Prize for peace in 1957 and became Prime Minister of Canada in 1963.

    Deifenbaker's time as Prime Minister went from 1957 to 1963. During the cold war he did help the Canadians but he didnt improve the war effort. He scrapped the Avro Arrow and instead brought in American Bomarc missiles for the defense of Canada. Waheads were not allowed in Canada which limited the American pressence in Canada but lowered their security. By canceling the Avro Arrow 14000 Canadians lost their jobs. The Deifenbaker government did not really help Canada during the cold war.

    NORAD or the North American Air Defense was a system to increase the defense against enemy missiles. NORAD let Americans and Canadians protect each other. This permitted USA to build the DEW line.
  • Sputnik and Canadas Space Program

    When the Soviets lauched their satellite Sputnik the satellite was no bother to the allies. However the Soviet Union could use the rocket to deliver nuclear bombs. The Americans felt as if the advantage was now with the Soviets so they replaced their long-range bomber aircraft with long-range missiles. This action was mimicked by the Soviets as thye built their own long-range missiles.

    Avro Arrow DebateThe Avro Arrow was a expensive, supersonic, interceptor, jet being developed by Canadians. It was cancelled by Diefenbaker who replaced it with American Bomarc Missiles. This made 14000 Canadians lose their jobs and increased American involvement in Canada.

    Draft Dodgers avoided conscription without any reason. This happened during the Vienam war. These Canadians were looked down apon.

    Veitnam was split into two halves during the Veitnam war. The south half was supported by the US and other democratic countries, while the north was suported by China and other communist countries. The US was trying to keep democracy in Veitnam while the communists were trying to force it out.

    Cuban Missile CrisisThe Cuban missile crisis is when spies spotted Soviet missiles being sent to Cuba. This was a big problem because they could be launched from Cuba to hit any major city in North America. US President kennedy quickly made navel blockade to stop the supply of rockets. Schoolchildren were drilled for the use of bomb shelters. The Canadian government thought it would be better to examine the missile sites. The blockade remained and the Soviet ships turned back avoiding the threat of war.

    Summit Series Last GameThe Summit series is a set of seven games between the Russian hockey team and the Canadian hockey team. The Canadians were shocked to learn that the Russians had equaled them in skill. The set of seven games ended in 3 games a piece and it was down to a final game. Canada won! This increased Canadas pride.

    The Berlin wall was useless when East Germans fled through Hungary and entered West Germany. The government dissalowed this so they went out through other countries and the government did nothing aboutthis. This made the Berlin wall useless and its effect fell.

    When the leader of the Soviet Union finally stepped down the soviet union split into 12 different countries. This ended the Warsaw act and the Cold war which was a big relief to most people. Russia came out as the succesor of the Soviet Union.
