In 1958 the band The Asteroids made "Shhhhh Blast Off" and "Don't Dig This Algebra" the first Rock' n Roll records made in Atlantic Canada. In 1959 the Beau-Marks made Canada's first international hit rock song "Clap Your Hands".

In the 60s the influence of British bands like the Beatles gave rise to many Canadian Rick bands, like Little Caesar & the Consuls, Ritchie Knight & the Mid-Knights, and Jon & Lee & the Checkmates. Many rock clubs also emerged during this time period.

In 1967 Canadian bands were feeling the influence of Psychedelic rock from America. In this time period many Canadian band began to explore drug experimentation. This time period also gave rise to Rock influences from non-western cultures, improvised live performances, and use of instrumental effects. The late 60s was also when Blues-Rock and other music fusions started to appear.

In the 70s The Canadian record industry boomed in growth, and so did the use of public arenas, like sports arenas, for concerts. This lead to more famous Musicians viewing Canada as a viable place to find a large audience. This was also the time period where the Canadian band Guess Who created one of their hit songs "American Woman" which became the first Canadian song to be the a number 1 hit in America.

In the 1970s and 1980s new sub-genres of Rock music emerged, Hard rock, progressive, and heavy metal and Canadian musicians were happy to explore these new styles. These musicians included Canada's most internationally successful album-rock band the Rush.

Just like Hard rock, progressive, and heavy metal, Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave, and Hardcore emerged in the 70s. This period of time gave rise to Canadian musicians like the bands Teenage Head, the Spoons, and D.O.A. and the Young Canadians.

The 90s and 2000s gave rise to many new Canadian musicians like hard rock band Tragically Hip and female rock singer Sass Jordan. Some famous Canadian rock musicians that appeared in this time period include Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne.
