  • Abraham Lincol Elected President (first term)

    Democrats split between north and south chose to different canidates. Noth being Senator Stephen Douglas. South Chose John C. Breckinnage. The Republicans originally chse Senator William Seard but Lincoln came to be the lead canidate.
    Lincoln won but with only a 40% popular vote and 0 votes in the south.
  • The Confederate States of America is Formed

    The Confederate States of America is Formed
    The South being upset after Lincolns winnning the election decide to seceed and form the Confederate States of America. The Confederate States of America consisted of: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisanna and Texas.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was a federal outost in Charleston, South Carolina. This fort was attacked by confederate toops, This battle started the Civil War.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    This was the first major battle of the Civil War. This lost for the Union shatter there hopes for winning the war quickly.

    He wanted to take advantage of the Union strenghts such as the Navy. His plan destroy the southern economy with naval blockage and second gain control of the Mississippi River to divide the south. That is how it gots its secdond name because the Union was snaking its way around the south like a snake.
  • Ulysses S. Grant

    Ulysses S. Grant
    Grant was a MAJOR General in the Civil War in Febuary he manhandled the south. He led an assault force into Tennesse with help of gunboats and he took out two outposts. 6 days later he captured Fort Henry on the Tennesse River. A week or so later he took Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. When the confederaste commander asked for terms of surrender Grant answered with "No terms except an unconditional surrender and immediate surrender can be accepted."

    USS Monitor v. CSS Virginia
    South had turned to ironcladships or ships that were heavily armored with iron. South captured a Union ship Merrimerck and turned it into the ironclad known today as the Virginia. This ship had destoryed the Unions navy intil the Union made the Monitor. These two clashed with the Monitor winning the battle but it did NOT destory the Virginia.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Confederates had suprised attacked Grant and had a lead in the two day battle. However, on the second day the Union had defeated the Confderates led by Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard.
  • Union Captures New Orleans

    Admiral David Farragut approached the two forts tht guarded the ports of New Orleans when he got there he knew he would never be able to defeat them. He decided to race pace at night, his planned worked within in days the city was under the controll of the Union
  • Seven Days' Battles

    Robert E. Lee launched a series of clashes, these forced the union army to retreat from near richmond. This battle named after how long it lasted was a terrible fight ending with 15,855 Union casualties and 20,204 for the Confederates.
  • Second Battle of Bull Run

    Jacksons troops met Pope's Union forces on the battlefield this day. The battle lasted 3 days with Confederates coming out on top.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This baddle became the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War. The two armies, Union and Confederate, armies met along the Antietam creek in Maryland. Union had suffered 12,000 casualties while the Confederates had 13,000.

  • Emancipation Proclamtion

    Lincoln had waited til the Union had a strong hold in the war before he set this into action. It had freed the saves, Not all slaves though only ones in the Confederate States. The lost of slaves in the south crippled the Confederates ability to wage war.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    From mid may to July forth General Grant cut of Vicksburg. Repeatldy shelling the city day and night til Pemberton surrendered the city. The city being cut off from food Grant had sent in food right after the city was surrendered.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    In this three day battle Union Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac had defeated Robert E. Lee. This battle had turned the tides of the Civil War.
  • 54th Massachusetts Infantry

    This consisted mostly of free African Americans. In july they led a heroic charge on South Carolinas Fort Wagner
  • Gettysburg Address

    "Four score and seven years ago," ...
    Lincoln gave this speech 4 and a half months after the Union victory at Gettysburg. It only lasted two mintues and in that time he had given one of Americas greatest speeches ever.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor

    The Battle of Cold Harbor Union side was led by Gen. Ullysses S. Grant. And the Confederate side was led by Robert E. Lee. It is remembered as the most bloodiest lopsided battles. The Union attacked the Confederates, but the Union lost. Even though both sides lost many casualties, the Confederates were able to pull out a win.

    As the Civil War was coming to an end Lincoln had gone to the Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. As Lincoln was enjoying "Our American Cousin" he was shot by John Wilks Booth.
