British acts timeline

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The act allowed merchants to put a tax on foreign molasses. The colonists saw this as a way to pay for military that is there to watch them and not protect them so they chose other means of getting molasses. The British government saw the act as a way for the colonies to pay for the war that was fought with British soldiers.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Stamp act was an act that had the colonists buy special paper for almost all documents and a few recreational items. The colonists saw this as another rediculous tax on them and boycotted. The British was another shot for the colonists to pay for the war that was fought and was getting outraged at them.
  • The American Colonies Act 1766

    The American Colonies Act 1766
    The act stated that Parliament has the same power over America as it does over England to show its authority over America. The colonists saw this as more of a challenge coming from England. England saw the act as a way to stop the rebellions.
  • Townshend Revenue Act

    Townshend Revenue Act
    The act was a tax by parliament on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. The colonists were highly angered at the tax on tea and boycotted and threw tea into the ocean, the Boston Tea Party. The British were still trying to get some income from the colonies and thought that the act would generate some.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act
    The act was a punishment to Boston for the destruction of merchandise, the act closed off all ports. The colonists enraged refused to pay the fine and began to riot in the city and other colonies started to revolt and form the Continental Congress. The British made the act to punish the port of Boston for the destruction of the tea and would end it when it was repaid.
