    The French and Indian War (Seven Years' War) ends.
  • The Stamp Act is created

    The Stamp Act is a tax that is put on official papers. Any legal document would be stamped. There were ways out of this tax, such as not buying taxed goods and not getting the stamps.
  • The Declaratory Act is passed.

    The Stamp Act was repealed, but the Declaratory Act was passed. This gave the British government the right to tax the colonists without their approval.
  • The Townsend Duties are passed.

    The Townsend Duties force the colonists to pay taxes on tea, paper, glass, lead, and paint imports.
  • Boston Massacre

    British soldiers shoot at a group of protesters. Five colonists are killed.
  • The Townsend Duties are repealed (mostly)

    The taxes that the Townsend Duties required (except for the tea import tax) were repealed.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The colonists reacted to the tax on tea by dumping hundreds of chests of tea in Boston Harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Boston Port Bill: Boston Harbor was not allowed to be used until the colonists paid for the destroyed tea.
    Massachusetts Government Act: This removed Massachusetts' charter.
    Administration of Justice Act: The British officials could get fair trials in England instead of in Massachusetts if a fair trial could not happen in Massachusetts.
    Quartering Act: British soldiers could live in any unoccupied buildings.
  • The Declaration of Independence is adopted

    The declaration of Independence is adopted on July 4, 1776. It was signed on August 2, 1776 by the Second Continental Congress.
