    The Underground Railroad
    From 1815-1860 the Underground Railroad took place. The Underground Railroad were secret routes that would help the black people escape from slavery in the U.S.A.These routes would lead up to Canada were the slaves would be safe and free. Even though travelling by the Underground Railroad was exhausting, there where some safe houses along the way were you could rest. the Underground Railroad helped free many black slaves.

    By the years of 1829 and 1830, so many slaves have escaped from U.S.A into Upper Canada that there were many people living there and there was more than 40 black communities.

    In August 8,1833 the British Parliment got rid of slavery. During this time many slaves were granted their freedoms by being released.

    In October 9 1850 an act called the Fugitive slave act took place. This act was an act of cruelty for all slaves. This act said that if you had a slave in the past and wanted it back, you could track him down and get them back . This was unfair and cruel because the black slaves had just gotten their freedom and it was being taken away from them again.

    Traveling methods of the Underground Railroad
    In June 17, 1852 the Undergroud Railroad had a new way of transportation. The new way of getting into Canada was by boat. People against slavery would help slaves get Onto boats in the U.S.A and get off ithe boat in Canada. This was a good new way of transportation because the slave no longer had to walk but could now take a boat which would be easier and faster. The only bad thing about helping slaves get on boats to Canada was that if you were caught you could get very badly punished.

    Mary Ann Shadd Cary was a black woman that had escaped her home town in the U.S.A to escape slavery and travel to Canada to be free. Mary Ann Shadd was a very successful woman that had attended
    school, and had opened a black school in the past. Living in Canada, Mary Ann Shadd became the first black woman to publish a paper in Canada and through all North America.
  • Anderson Abbot

    Anderson Abbot
    In the American Cevil war Anderson Abbot was one of the only black sougeons that served, and in 1861 he became the first Black physician in Canada.
  • Sophia Pooely

    Sophia Pooely
    Sophia Pooley was an black girl that was considered a slave since she was born since her two parents were already slaves. She had an owner and when she escaped, she was one of the first woman in Upper Canada. In 1865 she was interviewed by a publisher and she told her story about how she was the first black woman in Upper Canada

    Mifflin Gibbs
    Mifflin Gibbs was the first black politician elected by theVictoria Town Council. He had attempted to become a politician a few years before, bit hadn't been elected, so he tried again in 1866 and he made the council making his the first black politician.
