    Peace Treaty signed by Germany and the Allied powers after World War one that punished Germany severely.

    Manchuria, on China’s eastern seaboard, was attacked by Japan in 1931. The League of Nations did nothing.

    Italy invades Ethiopia
    Benito Mussolini, ordered Italian troops to invade Ethiopia.
  • Germany occupies Rhineland

    Germany occupies Rhineland
    Hitler ordered that his troops should openly re-enter the Rhineland thus breaking the terms of Versailles once again. He did order his generals that the military should retreat out of the Rhineland if the French showed the slightest hint of making a military stand against him. This did not occur. Over 32,000 soldiers and armed policemen crossed into the Rhineland.

    Germany and Italy had come to an informal agreement that in case of war, Italy would stand by Germany.

    The final death toll for Nanjing has been put as high as 250,000. The Guomintang leader, Chiang, had to establish a new capital in Chongqing. Within 5 months, 1 million Chinese people were under Japanese control. All of the major cities in China were captured by the Japanese and all of the major communication systems of the nation.

    Germany Annexes Austria (Anschluss)
    The Austrian Nazi population was going in Austria so their Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg met with Hitler in hopes of reasserting his country's independence. Instead he was bullied into naming several top Austrian Nazis to his cabinet. Schuschnigg Resigned. Then Hitler accompanied German troops into Austria, where enthusiastic crowds met them. Hitler appointed a new Nazi government, and on March 13 the Anschluss was proclaimed.

    German/Soviet Nonaggression Pact
    Representatives from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union met and signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other.

    Germany invades Poland

    From East Prussia and Germany in the north and Silesia and Slovakia in the south, German units, with more than 2,000 tanks and over 1,000 planes, broke through Polish defenses along the border and advanced on Warsaw in a massive encirclement attack. After heavy shelling and bombing, Warsaw surrendered to the Germans.
