Taken
June 14, 1941, Lina was taken
from her home by the Russians
and taken to a train station. The
Russian soldiers would try and
recruit the Lithuanian boys to
be in the army and mothers
would barter valuables for their
Son’s lives. -
Selling
July 26, 1941, The Russian
(NKVD) are selling groups of
people into slavery. -
Collective Farming
July 27, 1941, When Lina’s
group is not sold into slavery,
they move into a hut with a
cranky beet farmer on a
collective farm. Stalin and
the Russians are growing
paranoid and want Lina’s
Mom to spy on the other
Lithuanians and report the
conversations to the
commander but she denies. -
Work
July 28, 1941, Lina and her
Mother and brother work all
day to earn their food ration
of 300 grams of bread each.
The NKVD would reduce the
bread ration if anyone so
much as stumbled and they
enjoyed hitting and kicking
the deported people to get
them to move faster. -
Sick
November, Lina’s little brother
Jonas got sick with scurvy from
only eating bread and potatoes. Other get sick but none of the sick receive food for they aren’t working. -
Cristmas
December 24, 1941, Friends get
together and try to boost their
spirits by celebrating Christmas
Eve even though they don’t have
twelve courses of food. -
Moving
April, 1942, Lina finds out the NKVD are moving people and many hope they’re going home but some are staying behind. -
Trofimovsk
August, 1942, Lina arrives in
Trofimovsk, the very top of the
Arctic Circle. They are instructed
to build a hut for themselves and
a bakery for the NKVD. -
Ships
September, 1942, American
ships come but the deported
are instructed to stay in their
huts and not notify the
Americans to their presence
or they’ll be shot. -
Deported?
October, 1942, Lina finds out
that she was deported because
she helped her cousin and family
to escape to Germany, her parents
expected to join them but were taken
before they could make it. It was their
freedom for hers. -
Inspector
January, 1943, An inspector
comes by and helps the sick,
some Russians were against
Stalin but didn’t like Hitler
either so they did their
best to help the deported.
