    Most melodies in early baroque were recitative, based more on linguistic accent.
    There were both diatonic scales and 24 major/minor scales in harmonies.
    Both strophic and binary forms were present, though binary forms were more common.
    String and woodwind instruments were common during this time period.

    Middle Baroque

    Melodies became more organized and used more compositional techniques.
    The tonal system for the major and minor keys was beginning to be developed.
    Fugues were developed, based mostly on imitation and organization.
    Solo voices, as well as string instruments, were heavily dominant. String instruments, in particular, were the most commonly used instrument. They were mostly accompanied by woodwinds or the occasional basso continuo.

    Melodies were often long phrases that built up to a cadence and not always clear.
    The diatonic system was firmly established and used during this period.
    Da capo aria was popular in vocal forms, ritornello for ensembles, and binary for dance and sonata music.
    Stringed instrumentation was still largely popular, though keyboard music slowly began to make its way into mainstream music.
