The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization. The Charter was signed by the representatives of 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 member states.

Dr Evatts was elected President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The only Australian to have ever held the position, he presided over the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The Declaration arose directly from the experience of the Second World War and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled.

A vote in August, supervised by the UN for independancy for East Timorese from Indonesia. 78.5 percent of the population voted for independancy. This caused militia forces to act against the East Timorese people violently. In September the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) was deployed to the country and brought the violence to an end.
