Before entering kindergarten, my parents wanted me to be familiar with books and often read my sister and me bedtime stories. These were all in Spanish.
-
At the start of kindergarten, I was placed in ESL classes and began to learn and eventually read my first words in English
-
Since learning English was a bit hard for me to learn, it took me a full year to learn how to read long sentences in English.
-
At this point, I had learned how to read picture books on my own and began to comprehend the text to a certain extent (I would occasionally need assistance on certain words and structures)
-
Towards the end of second grade, I began to collect magazines and read them with my friends.
-
By this time, I was fully able to read and comprehend English books, passages, and articles without the aid of a dictionary.
-
I began to read chapter books as a part of my school's curriculum.
-
I began school at a magnet school where there were more intense reading requirements and the school helped me improve dramatically.
-
This school year, my teacher refrained from giving us fiction books and we spend all of our time reading non-fiction. Since I was used to mainly fiction with just a bit of non-fiction, this class really helped me expand my knowledge.
-
Rather than reading books, all of my classes were very textbook heavy and we were required to answer comprehension questions at the end of each chapter.
-
For this year, I took AP Literature where I was able to expand what I read and use reading strategies to help me understand what I was reading.
-
I began reading college-level work, books, and passages which helped improve my vocabulary.
