    The first problem with building the canal was the disease that spread like wild fire. Malaria, and yellow fever were the main concerns. Until, William C. Gorgas discovered that damp, dark areas were causing these diseases. Carlos Juan Finlay was one to discover that yellow fever came from a certain type of mosquito, just as Ronald Ross was to discover Malaria came from a certain mosquito. These men figured out that these mosquitoes live in swamps and forest, so those were the first to be cut.
