  • Election of 1948

    The Nationale Party wins against the United Party on a platform of racial segregation.
  • Defiance Campaign

    Blacks begin protesting the racial laws.
  • The Bantu education act is passed

    A law is passed that segregates black education from white education.
  • Nelson Mandela arrested

    Nelson Mandela is arrested with others for protesting. After a 4 year trial he is found not guilty.
  • Bantustans created

    Separate homelands for blacks is created in South Africa.
  • Sharpeville massacre

    69 people are killed in a riot at Sharpville.
  • Nelson Mandela arrested (again)

    Mandela is arrested for his role in a bombing campaign, he is sentenced for life in prison.

    Robben Island 1964-1982

    Mandela is incarcerated on Robben Island. He spends his time doing hard labour, breaking rocks and reading.
  • Rhodesia gains independence

    Rhodesia (a colony of the UK) illegaly breaks away from Britain by not allowing blacks a say in government.
  • UN expells South Africa

    Due to internationale backlash against apartheid the UN votes to expell South Africa.
  • Soweto uprising

    Highschool students in Soweto protest for better black education. Between 1 and 600 people died.

    Pollsmoor prison 1982-1988

    After becoming famous internationally, the government decides to move him to a nicer prisson.

    Victor Verster prison 1988-1990

    After becoming even more famous the government moves him to a even nicer prison.
  • Ban on ANC is lifted

    President de Klerk lifts the ban on ANC.
  • Mandela becomes president

    Mandela wins the election.
