  • Defiance Campaign

    The largest scale non-violent resistance ever seen in south africa and the first campaign pursued jointly by all racial groups under the leadership of the african national congress and the south aftican indian congress.
  • Albert Luthuli wins Noble Peace Prize

    he won it for his role in the non-violent struggle against apartheid.
  • Sharpville Massacre

    at least 180 black afrians injured and 69 killed when south african police opened fire at people who were protesting against the pass laws ner vereeniging at the township of sharpeville.
