    Native Urban Areas Act No 21
    This act required the authorities to monitor the black citizens in their area. If they found someone who was considered "surplus" they were removed.
  • Industrial Conciliation Act No 11

    Industrial Conciliation Act No 11
    Blacks were not allowed to register to be in trade unions. This act also prevented the creation of black trade unions.
  • Representation of Blacks Act No 12

    Representation of Blacks Act No 12
    The black voters were removed from the roll that every other citizen was on. They were put on a separate roll and the representatives given to the black community were white senators.
  • Aliens Act No 1

    Aliens Act No 1
    This act denied aliens access to Unions. Also these people could could not assume a surname.
  • Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No 55

    Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No 55
    This act prohibited the marriages of white to other racial groups. For example a black man could not marry a while women under this law.
  • Population Registration Act No 30

    Population Registration Act No 30
    This act made people register as one of the four distinct racial groups in South Africa. The four groups were white, black, colored and Asian.
  • Group Areas Act No 41

    Group Areas Act No 41
    Under this act certain areas were designated for certain groups. It was required for racial groups to live in these areas.
  • Extension of University Education Act No 45

    Extension of University Education Act No 45
    The Minister of Bantu Education chose that African students could only go to certain colleges. African students could not attend the University of Cape Town or the University of Witwatersrand unless they had a permit.
  • Urban Blacks Council Act No 79

    Urban Blacks Council Act No 79
    This act established the black system of "self government". These areas were called townships.
  • General Law Amendment (Sabotage Act) Act No 76

    General Law Amendment (Sabotage Act) Act No 76
    This act allowed the President to declare organizations unlawful. People could be banned from gatherings if there was more than one visitor at a time. Anyone who committed any form of "sabotage" could be tried.
