    Link Dutch settlers arrived in South Africa in 1652, and soon after they started to in import slaves from West Africa, Malaysia, and India. This was just the start the massive dominance of whites over the native South African people. The Dutch settlers were the ones who would start the major problems South Africa.

    Link In 1867, the first diamond was found near the Orange River, which was later identified as a 21 caret. This was just the beginning, later that year there were more diamonds found between the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The mining actually started in 1870. The black workers were paid a lot less than the whites, and were also giving the most dangerous jobs. They had no time to try and fix the wages and working condition, because they were under constant surveillance.

    The Boer war was started because of the British’s direct control over the largest gold-mining complex in the world. When the Boers attacked the British were completely unprepared and were lacking fire arms. The Boers defeated the British in many different battles, but when the British troops started to arrive, the tides turned to favor them. The war finally ended on May 31, 1902 with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging.

Their Independence was a huge deal to them, and was pretty big news for the rest of the world. The South Americans had to celebrate while they still could, because something worst would soon be upon them.

    Link In 1948, South Africa’s freedom was cut short by the introduction of Apartheid with in the country. This new form of “organization” was just a form of racism. What the government deicide to do was separate the people in to four racial groups Blacks, Whites, Asians, and Mixed race. When they separated these races they also made certain residential areas, jobs, education, transportation, and health systems any contact between races was strictly prohibited.

    The African National Congress or the ANC joined the anti-apartheid moment in 1952. They like many others felt the government had taken it been blinded by power, and it was completely unfair for them to separate the different races. The government did not enjoy the defiance it was receiving, so they passed a law stating that no one could hold or attend protest meetings.

    The 1960 protest was formed, because of a new law that was passed saying that all black citizens had to carry a passbook when they left their home areas. The citizens had a major problem with this law; it is like they didn’t have any right what so ever. So on march 21 1960, a group of people surrounded the police station, and ignored all threats to leave. When that did this the police opened fire, killing 69 of the protesters.

    Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962, for leaving the country illegally, and was sentenced to five years in prison. While serving, in 1964 his comrades from the ANC were arrested and nelson was out on trial with them for treason, sabotage, and violent conspiracy. Once again he was found guilty, this lead to a life time in prison. During his time he was in two different prisons, both had high security. Nelson was treated very badly during the 27 years he was in prison.

    The apartheid system began to fall apart in the 1980’s. There were thousands of unemployed black citizens, and the whites were the minority. The Economy took a major drop and the country itself was falling apart. But in 1989 F.W. De Klerk was elected and has he had promised he fix the problems between the majority and the minority. He released Nelson Mandela from prison. They worked together to fix the country.

    In 1994, South Africa had its very first multi-racial presidential election. This was a very big accomplishment for the once apartheid country. The biggest shock was when Nelson Mandela, was elected as president of South Africa. He was the first black president in South Africa, after a hundred years of white rule. Him being elected showed that the aparthied was truely over.
