    The African Union was founded in 1945. It had 193 member states. Their four main purposes of United Nations are To keep peace throughout the world. To develop friendly relations among nations, to help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each others rights and freedoms. To be a Centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.

    Apartheid Creation
    The apartheid was a creation of three hundred seventeen laws by Dr. D.F. Malan's nationalist party. They were elected in 1948. Apartheid means "apartness" It represents how the blacks and whites were separated. They had different bathrooms drinking fountians, etc.

    This act required all Africans to carry a passbook which is similar to a passport. They had to have one of these so that if they were applying for a job they could see their personal information. If they did not obey this rule Africans would be kicked out of the area.

    In 1960 the ANC was outlawed. Mandela continued to fight for the rights of people, traveling illegally outiside of South Africa.

    Punishments of Passbooks
    A large group of Africans in Sharpeville revolted by not carrying around their passbooks. Because of this the government declared a state of emergency in this region. This emergency carried on for 156 days, leaving 69 people dead, and 190 wounded.
  • The End of Apartheid

    Apartheid came to an end in 1990 when president F.W. de klerk announced a formal end to Apartheid. By 1991, all apartheid laws were repealed. The sanctions, created by the UN, were repealed as well. South Africa is presently in a process of transition.
