  • Introduction to Anthony Johnson's Life

Anthony Johnson had a very productive life. He was taken from Africa to Europe as a slave, and he changed his name and religion so many times. His name was Antonio and then he changed it to Anthony Johnson. He also changed his religion to Christianity to fit in, in Europe. When he arrived in Virginia he was an indentured servant and then, obviously, he became free. He also took his wife, Maria or Mary, out of slavery. • Act X No Guns for Negroes

Act X No Guns for Negroes
The Negroes could not own guns or ammunition after this law was passed. They probably couldn't have guns because of the Powhatan Massacre and the Englishman didn't want any more Indian's attacking. This is important to the concept of diminishing progress because the Negroes could not protect themselves. This information was found in Document A- "Mastering the New World- Antonio" pgs. 19 and 20. This information was also found on pg. 4- "January 1639/40- Act X."

Anthony Johnson bought land from Captain Taylor in 1645. He also had a slave, but the slave ran away. So Anthony Johnson went to court against a white man, which in that time white men and free africans were almost equal in court. Johnson won the case against the white man, which at that time the court was fairer than, in like 1705. This information is found in Court Case A and Court Case B.
  • Baptism Does Not Exempt Them From Bondage

Baptism Does Not Exempt Them From Bondage
This law shows that you can't be freed because you got baptized. That means if you were about to get freed that you had to be a slave for life. It's sad that all of the slaves had to be slaves for life. This made the concept of diminishing progress worse because now any new slave from Africa or anywhere else had no chance of getting free. This information is found in ACT III-September 1667 on page 6.
  • Casual Killing of Slaves

    Casual Killing of Slaves
In this law if a slave running away or disobeying their master they can get killed. This law shows that slaves are beginning to be more like property than people. This law affects the concept of diminishing progress because slaves are getting less valued. This information is found on page 7 in ACT I- October 1669.
  • African Desent, Mullato, and American Indians Cannot Bear Office

African Desent, Mullato, and American Indians Cannot Bear Office
This law shows that any person besides white men cannot bear office. This means that the Africans, Mullatos, and Indians, even if they are free, had no say in the government. This affects the concept of diminishing progress because people that were slaves had no way to share their beliefs. This information is found in CHAP. IV.- October 1705 on page 13.
