Anotated Timeline of the 1st 3 presidents

  • Hamilton vs. Jefferson

    Hamilton vs. Jefferson

    They had different views on the constitution, one being that Jefferson favored a strict constitution and Hamilton favored a loose one. Both of their ideas/opinions were needed in the US.
  • Proclaiming American Neutrality

    Washington warned the Americans to stay neutral in the conflict between Britain and France because if they didn’t they were at risk of invasion and economic disasters.
  • The Whiskey Rebellion

    People refused to pay the tax on whiskey and rebels closed courts and attacked tax collectors. Washington then led an army and the rebellion dissolved. He demonstrated to everyone that the government was committed to enforcing its laws.
  • Jay’s Treaty

    Designed to resolve issues between the United States and Britain which allowed them to avoid war with Britain. It was unable to convince the British to end their practice of stopping American ships on the high seas. It caused a lot of controversies and many said it had no protection for American shipping.
  • The Election of 1796

    Washington wanted to retire but was convinced to stay another term. Later, John Adams ran as the Federalist candidate for President as well as Jefferson and Burr for the republican side, while Thomas Pinckney ran for Vice President. Adams won but Jefferson came second in the electoral vote race he became vice president. This was the first contested American election.
  • The Alien and Sedition Acts

    Alien Acts and Enemies Act gave the President the power to arrest and deport citizens of other countries living in the United States. Under The Sedition Acts people who wrote, published or said anything against the government or officials were at risk of being fined or jailed. These laws raised the requirements for citizenship from 5-14 years.
  • Gabriel Prosser’s Rebellion

    Gabriel Prosser’s Rebellion

    Demonstrated the unresolved issue of slavery. Gabriel and other slaves planned a rebellion in an area around Richmond, Virginia where they had meetings and Prosser encouraged the other slaves to adopt the ideas about liberty that sparked the American Revolution. The rebellion failed and many were caught and executed, including Prosser. Many whites became feared by the slave revolt's population.
  • The Campaign

    Jeffersonian newspapers targeted Adams. Calling him an enemy and a monocharist. They also attempted to separate him in the people's minds from George Washington considering he was a great leader. Federalists then attacked Jefferson saying he would turn the US into complete chaos and that it would become weak and disorganized. Although the campaign was complete chaos it was marked the 1st peaceful transition from one political party to another.
  • The Judiciary Acts

    Decreased the number of Supreme Court justices and increased the number of federal judges. It expanded federal jurisdiction, eliminated supreme court justices' circuit court duties, and created 16 federal circuit court judgeships.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    Dramatically increased both the national debt and the size of the United States. It strengthened the country, provided to the westward expansion, and confirmed the implied powers of the federal constitution.
  • Hamilton and Burr

    Hamilton opposed Burr's bid for the governorship then his followers in New York to not support Burr. Burr became very mad and Hamiton then continued to urge federalists to support Jefferson. Burr later challenged Hamilton to a duel. During the duel, Burr shot Hamilton and fled New York in order to avoid charges. Jefferson and Burr later won due to the loss of Federalists.
  • The Lewis and Clark Expedition

    The Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Goals were to search for river routes to the western ocean, make contact with the Native Americans living in the territory and gather information about the region's natural resources. Reached the Pacific ocean in late 1805 and returned to the east by september of 1806. It succeeded in filling in details of the lands to the west.
  • The Embargo of 1807

    Jefferson outlawed almost all trade with foreign countries to show to Britain and France that they were dependent on American goods and to convince them to respect them, but the Americans hated the embargo and it ruined Jefferson's second term. The Americans grew angrier when it was strongly impacting the economy it negatively impacted trade.
