She started with a strict schedule of constant vocabulary and soon found out that wasn't working. She began to teach Helen based on her interest. She did this by spelling it out in Helen's hand. Within 6 months Helen had learned 575 words, some multiplication tables, and the braille system.

She was recommended by the director of Perkins after he received a call from Helen Keller's father Arthur.
