He decided to kill it by ordering all government deposits withdrawn & placed in smaller state banks. The effect of his actions led to the Panic of 1837 & sent the nation into a financial panic where many people lost their jobs and farmers lost their land. Land values dropped and banks failed. Many couldn't afford food or rent.
