The Butler Education Act 1944
The Butler Education Act 1944 was introduced for free secondary schooling for all pupils. It raised the school leaving age to 15. The act bought in a Tripartite system, which considerd three different types of schools; the Grammer school, Secondary Technical school and the Secondary Modern school.
To see which school was suited best to the pupils, the pupils undertook a 11+ exams. -
Circular 10/65 1965
Labour government declared to end selection at eleven plus and to end separation in secondary schools. -
Circular 10/70 1970
Cicular 10/70 withdrew the requirements of Local Education Authorities (LEA) to become comprehensive. -
1972 Raising of the School leaving age
Often referred to as the ROSLA, the school leaving age was raised from 15 to 16. -
Education (Special Education) Act 1981
Introduction of 'special needs' in to the education system. Children with 'special needs' were to be educated in mainstream schools with their needs met. -
National Vocational Qualifications
The introduction of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ). This was classified as a work based award achieved through training and assessments. It tested the competence in a work place and led to parallel introduction of national qualifications in schools and colleges. -
General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
Introduction of GCSE's in schools with first GCSE examinations to take place in 1988. The GCSE replaced the previous O Level and CSE systems by merging them together. -

The Education Reform Act 1988
After the Butler Act 1944, it is regarded as the most important legislation to be implemented in the education system. It showed the introduction of:
- The National Curriculum, which stated that core subjects of Maths, Science and English must be taught fromthe ages 5-16.
- National Curriculum Assessments - national testing (SATs) at the ages of 5,7 and 11 were to be undertaken to measure the school quality.
- Grant Maintained Schools - allowed schools to be remove themselves from the LEA -
Nursery
Started Nursery at Rookery Nursery. -
Eductional (Schools) Act 1992
The introduction of OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education). OFSTED were to monitor and report on the quality of schools. -
Infants School
Started Rookery Infants school. Started from Reception class to Year 2. -
Teacher Training Agency (TTA) 1993
The TTA took control of the funding and quality of teaching. -
The Dearing Review
The Dearing Review was published in response to the campaigns against the National Curriculum and its testing regime by teaching unions. The report suggested a slimmer,less prescirbed curriculum and a range of academic/vocational pathways for student between the ages of 14 -19. -
Juniors School
Started Rookery Juniors School. Started from Year 3 to Year 6. -
Eduaction Act 1997
Key stage 1 class sizes were to be reduced to 30. -
SATs in Year 6
Took my SATs examinations in Year 6, which were introduced in The Education Reform Act 1988. These exams determined my KS2 grades from which the secondary schools will see how well I will perform in secondary school and predict the years GCSE grades. -
Secondary School
Moved to Holyhead Secondary School. Spent five years of my life there, studying from Year 7 to Year 11 from 1999 - 2004. Achieved all my GCSE grades from A-C and a GNVQ with merit. -
SAT's in Year 9
Took SAT's examination in Year 9 to determine my KS4 grades. Luckily I did well and was put in set 1 for English, Maths and Science. -
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) 2004
EMA rolled out to encourage post 16 education. Payments of £10, £20 or £30 are to be given per week depending on household income for those who are on eligible courses such as GCSEs, A or AS-levels, BTecs, NVQs or Basic Skills courses. -
Higher Education Act 2004
Act increased university fees from the fixed rate of £1125 to anything between £0 and £3000. -
College
Continued on to studying on to my AS Levels of Chemistry, Biology, ICT and Law at Cadbury SixthForm College, for two years. -
The Children Act: Every Child Matters 2004
Every child matters integrated childrens services within schools to help safeguard the children. It promoted a be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well - being outcome. -
National Strategy for Secondary Education 2005
Replaced the KS3 strategy. The strategy was to improve the teaching and learning of literacy, numeracy and ICT across the curriculum. It was to have an interactive whole class teaching approach, which will get the best out of evey child. To have small groups or even one to one tutition for those who needed it. Schools were to have a innovative use of ICT in both classrooms and homes. -
University Life
After completing my A Levels, I moved on to University of Wolverhampton, studying Information Technology. During my four years here, I did an Industrial Placement for a year where I gained experience in working in a school environment. -
SAT's abolished
Ed Ball announced the abolishment of SAT's for 14 years olds. -
Renewed National Curriculum
Introduction of new aims for the Year 7's in September 2008. The curriculum was to enable young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. -
Intoduction of English Baccalaureate
Intoduction of English Baccalaureate introduced as a performance measure in the 2010 performance tables. Include English, Maths, Science, Modern or Ancient Language, a humanity (History or Geography) as core subjects. Is introduced to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to study a broad core of subjects. -
Graduation
Graduation. After a hard four years of studying I graduated with a first class degree in BSc (Hons) Information Technology. -
PGCE
Decided to pursue my career in teaching ICT, therefore started my PGCE course at University of Wolverhamptom. -
Education leaving age to 18
The governments wants to raise the school leaving age to 18.
