French and Indian War
A war between France and Britain that not only forced Britain to tax the colonies more from a lack of money, but was a direct cause of the Proclamation of 1763. -
Proclamation of 1763
A document created by Britain that prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists did not like having to remain in their small piece of America. -
Sugar Act
An act that brought taxes to goods like molasses while making collection of the taxes more strict; both of which angered the colonists. -
Currency Act
In order to help British merchants, this act was passed to prevent colonial bills of credit from having the same power as legal tender, which is what a lot of colonists used. -
Stamp Act
An act that put British taxes on many goods that colonists relied on. This enraged the colonists, who had little tax before/taxed on their own terms. -
Quartering Act
An act passed by Parliament that had colonial governments pay for the quartering of British soldiers. -
Townshend Acts
Acts that put taxes onto imports. After repealing the Stamp Act, Britain believed this act wouldn't have the same negative response, but it was proven otherwise. -
Boston Massacre
A conflict between British soldiers and colonists that erupted into gunfire. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act helped the British East India Company survive by having them sell their tea to the colonies. Colonists did not like being forced to buy their tea from a specific place. -
Boston Tea Party
Disguised colonists dumped thousands of pounds of tea into the ocean after the Tea Act. This enraged the British government, creating worse relations overall. -
The Intolerable Acts
A series of laws that followed the Boston Tea Party that punished the colonists. The harbor was shut down, British soldiers occupied more colonial land, and more changes were made that upset the colonists. -
First Continental Congress
A meeting between the colonies that created solidarity, and helped to think of ways to respond to aggressive British policies. -
Patrick Henry's Speech
A passionate and popular speech by Patrick Henry which supported going to war with Britain to create lasting freedom for the colonies. -
Shot Heard 'Round The World
A battle between colonial minutemen and British soldiers in Lexington; considered to be the beginning of the Revolutionary War. -
Common Sense
A book written by Thomas Paine that talked about the crown's lack of respect for the colonies. He argued that not supporting the king was common sense.
