American Revolution

  • Navigation acts

The Navigation acts were laws passed by England to maintain control over colonial trade. The acts made colonists by English goods in limited trade between the colonists and other countries.
  • Proclamation act

This was the act that said that English speakers could not settle on land on the west of the Appalachian Mountains. This angered the colonists because they fought for the land that they can not live on.
  • Treaty of Pairs of 1763

The treaty of Paris was a document that ended the war between the British and the French over the Ohio river valley. This ended French power in North America and Expanded British Territory and increased debt.
  • Sugar act

The sugar act required taxes to be paid to the crown by weight. This caused prices of sugar and other products to increase, angering the colonists.
  • Stamp act

The stamp acts made the colonists by stamps for basically every piece of paper ever used!!! What is your deal Britain? So the sons of liberty was created to protest the taxes that Britain repealed anyway.
  • Stamp Act Congress

This congress was created to send a request for the repeal of the stamp act to Britain and organized boycotts of goods sent from Britain. This had no effect on Britain, but the protests were very effective.
  • Writs of Assistance

The Writs of Assistance gave rights to British soldiers to inspect everything for no reason. America was so offended, that this appears in at least two legal documents that occurred to form the country.
  • Quartering Acts

These acts said that any solder can come to your door and you have to let them live with you (seriously Britain, nice move). Again, we get seriously upset, and this also appears in at least 2 legal documents to prevent it from happening.
  • The Declaratory acts

Now Britain decides that they need to make a law that will announce to the world that they are in charge of us. They just don't get it, do they? This doesn't have much of an impact because the colonists don't care what that law said.
  • Townshend acts

These are the acts that Britain tried to tax almost everything. The colonists ended up making their own stuff instead of buying Britain's.
  • Boston Massacre

This was a self defensive shooting to protect the British soldiers from a drunk mob. This caused a lot of propaganda and angered the colonists.
  • Tea act

This lowered the price of tea by cutting out American merchants in Britain. This also made the colonists mad for some reason (they were getting a better deal).
  • Boston Tea party

The Sons of Liberty tossed the tea into the harbor because the governor would not send back the ships. This caused the Coercive acts.
  • The Coercive acts

These are the laws that were used to punish Boston for the tea party. This caused more protest.
  • First Continental Congress

This was a gathering of delegates from all colonies but Georgia to make decisions. This was no effective in uniting the colonies but it did make a militia.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

The British march out of Boston to raid the towns looking for Sam Adams and John Hancock, and ammunition. They were not successful in either mission.
  • Second Continental Congress

We make an ARMY! We name George Washington. This aggravates the British.
  • the Battle of Bunker hill

Talk about a weird name. The battle for upper ground and a good position over Boston wasn't even fought on this hill. The British took the hill but suffered more casualties, winning only by a low store of ammunition.
  • the Olive branch petition

Our last chance at peace with Britain was rejected by the King. That triggered the rest of this war because we all lost hope for peace.
  • Common sense

This is the pamphlet published by Thomas Payne to promote the Patriot cause. This caused a new found support for the Patriot cause.
  • Declaration of Independence

This was the document that was passed to show that the colonies were independent of Britain. This caused the King to send more soldiers and fight the Revolutionary war.
