French and Indian War
The British and Americans won the war, and in 1763, France gave up most of its territory in North America to England. -
Proclamation
-The Proclamation of 1763 forbade the settlement of American colonists beyond the Appalachian mountains pending further adjustments. -It was designed to fairly work out Native disputes.-The Proclamation angered colonists, as they had fought for this territory and believed they had a right to it.-Many colonists settled on this territory anyway. -
Stamp Act
-The Stamp Act required colonists to buy stamps to put on all kinds of products, like newspapers.
-Colonists protested.
-They said that the king could not raise taxtes without sonsulting the people.
-Since colonists did no ekect representatives to Parliament, they said they were not consulted about the new taxes. -
Boston Massacre
- In 177-, a fight broke out between a mob of Americans and British soldiers. -The soldiers fixed into the crowd and 5 colonists were killed.
-
Intolerable Acts
-Britain responded by closing Boston.Harbor, sending British troops and quartering(housing) them in American homes, and closing down the Massachusetts gorvernent.
-Colonists called these Intorable Acts. -
First Continental Congress
-In 1774, colonists from the different colonies called together a congress to meet and discuss how they should respond to Britain.
-They agreed to meet again in May 1775, and in the meantime to boycott British products. -
Second Continental Congress
-Soon, the Second Continental Congress met.
-It voted to create an army, and it placed George Washington in command. -
Lexington and Concord
-On April17,1775, British soldiers marched on the town of Lexington, Messachusetts, to capture some hidden guns.
-Fighting broke out.
-British troops continued to concord, but minutemen firedat them from behind the rocksand trees.
-By the end of the day,minutemen had killed 273 British soldiers. -
Independence
On July 4, 1776, Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. -
French Allies
-After Saratoga, the French began sending troops and ships to help the Americans fight the British.
-The young Marquis de Lafayette became a good friend of Washington's. -
Freeing Boston
-The Washington received 60 cannons captured from Fort Ticonderoga.
-He secretly put them on the hills overlooking Boston, and the British were forced to retreat from the city. -
Yorktown
-Washington and the French movedtheir armies into Virginia and attacked General Cornwall's troopsat Yorktown.
-With his army surrounded, Cornwall surrenderedat October,1781.
-This marked the end of major fighting.
